Advice for Bandits

Driving instructors of Dorset Police gave early road safety advice to members of the Bridport Bandits Autograss Racing team last month.

On Saturday 27 March, the six newest recruits to the racing club aged between 12 and 16 years were given a presentation called ‘Dying to Drive’ – aimed specifically at young drivers. This interactive experience concentrated on basic observation and anticipation techniques based on ‘Look, Assess, Decide, Act.’

Other topics covered were the use of mobile phones not only on the road but as a pedestrian, seat belts, appropriate speed and speed limits.

The presentation was followed by practical on-road tuition in instructors’ cars on private roads with a large emphasis on observation and the danger of blind spots in modern cars.

The day at Dorset Police gave the young people the opportunity to learn the system of car control; gave them a good grounding for their future driving on the road and helped them understand how to handle vehicles safely when on the grass.

John Russell, Chairman of the Bridport Autograss Racing Club, said: “It was an invaluable start for the six racers who will now be able to take to the track in April behind the wheel of Bandits’ Minis with confidence.

“A great time was had by all and the Bridport Autograss Racing Club would like to convey their warmest thanks to Dorset Police for this opportunity.”
