Annette Brooke MP Visits Teachers Building Society

Mid Dorset and North Poole MP, Annette Brooke MP visited Teachers Building Society in Wimborne on 16 July.

She discussed some of the challenges currently facing the building society sector as well as local issues, such as the lack of affordable housing and teaching children about general finances.

The society shared with Annette Brooke its vision to support teachers both to buy their first homes and provide help for teaching children about general finance. Several members of staff from Teachers Building Society have recently visited local secondary schools to provide finance education and answer pupils’ questions about topics like the credit crunch and how mortgages work.

James Bawa, chief executive of Teachers Building Society, says, “We are very grateful to Annette Brooke for taking the time to visit us and hear about our plans to expand our provision of financial capability education. In a recent survey, 94% of parents think that financial education should be taught in schools. We share parents’ and teachers’ concerns that children need to know more about how to manage money.”

Affordable housing is a key issue for the MP and for a number of years Teachers Building Society has specialised in supporting the government’s home buying schemes for teachers.

James continues, “We are determined to continue to be true to our founding purpose of helping teachers onto the property ladder and we are also committed to supporting the local community where we can.

“It’s important for local businesses such as ours to have a voice in Parliament, and Annette Brooke can help us to be heard.”

Teachers Building Society supports the government’s HomeBuy Direct scheme, which aims to help first-time buyers by providing an equity loan for up to 30% of the purchase price on specific new-build properties.
