Appeal after distraction burglary

Police in Bournemouth are appealing for witnesses and information after an elderly man became a victim of a distraction burglary in the Pokesdown area of the town.

The incident happened overnight on 28 April when two men stole £700 cash and jewellery from the 70-year-old man at his home in Pokesdown.

Police Constable Richard Skinner of Bournemouth’s Priority Crime Team, said: “On Wednesday 28 April 2010, the elderly man had been drinking at The Seabournes pub on Christchurch Road and had left the public house alone.

“At around 10pm that evening, the victim was approached by the offender outside Barclays Bank on Southbourne Grove.”

This man is described as white, of slim build, in his late thirties, with balding, light brown hair, wearing a black leather jacket, with an earring in his left ear and had a northern, possibly, Liverpudlian accent.

PC Skinner said: “Whilst outside the bank, this man offered the victim a ride home, and led him to a car, which was being driven by another man.”

The car is said to be an estate and dark in colour, with alloy wheels and roof bars and the driver of the vehicle was described as white, of stocky build and wearing a dark t-shirt.

PC Skinner continued: “At around 10.20pm, the men drove to the victim’s home on Wheaton Road in Pokesdown and arrived at the property.

“The victim invited the man with the northern accent into his home for a coffee to repay him for the help.

“After approximately ten minutes, the offender made his excuses and left.”

In the morning, the victim discovered that his wallet, containing £700 in cash and a quantity of jewellery which belonged his late wife, was missing.

PC Skinner added: “We’re very keen to find these men and I’d like to hear from anyone who knows who they are, and from anyone who has any other information that might help to identify them.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 01202 or 01305 22 22 22 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
