Bogus phone call warning

Christchurch Council is warning residents about phone calls from people purporting to be from the Council offering Council Tax refunds.

The caller says that the householder is due a refund and then asks for their bank account details so that the refund is credited to their account.

Michael Turvey, Chief Executive of Christchurch Council, said: “If someone is due a refund on their Council Tax, they will be sent a cheque. We never credit their bank accounts.

“These calls are definitely bogus and anyone giving their bank account details may find themselves losing money rather than gaining a refund. We recommend that anyone getting a call like this asks for details of who is calling and then contacts the police.”
