Burglars like it hot!

Police in Bournemouth and Poole are issuing a warning to residents that although household burglary is at an all time low in the area, the good weather is causing a sudden rise.

Up until the end of May, the number of reported household burglaries in Bournemouth and Poole was lower than last year. However, as the beginning of June hits record levels for sunshine, it also hits record levels for the number of household burglaries.

In the past two weeks, there have been 60 burglaries, which is already 30 per cent up on the same period last year.

Almost 75 per cent of these crimes have occurred in homes where doors and windows have been left insecure.

John Green, Crime Reduction Advisor for Bournemouth and Poole, said: “The average burglar is an opportunist, but people are making it far too easy.

“Hot weather brings out burglars, because homeowners are moving into the garden, leaving front doors and windows insecure, with handbags and purses left just inside the door. Or, once they have had enough sun, people are moving indoors, or going out, forgetting to lock their doors, patios and windows.

“Homeowners are also leaving ground floor doors and windows insecure, which burglars can easily reach through or climbed to.

“During this hot weather, homeowners need to consider the security of their homes, as well as their own enjoyment.”

Dorset Police is also issuing the following advice to homeowners:

•   Make sure you lock doors, windows and gates even when you are home. Lock your sheds and garages too.

•   Check that the garden is clear of objects that can be used to break doors and windows, and remove anything that aids climbing. Also lock bicycles.

•   Do not leave bags, purses, keys or valuables on view near doors and windows. Laptops, games consoles and satnavs should be hidden from view.

John Green added: “Taking reasonable steps such as this should reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime, but if you still have concerns over the security of your home, contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team for advice on (01202) 222 222.”
