La Bohème

Based on Henri Murger’s novel ‘Scenes de la vie de boheme’, La Bohème focuses on the love between seamstress Mimi and poet Rodolfo. After falling in love instantly, Rodolfo later leaves Mimi due to her flirtatious behaviour, although he’s wracked by guilt as their life together has probably worsened Mimi’s delicate constitution. In true tragic opera fashion, the pair reunite briefly at the end before Mimi dies.

International sopranos Maria Tsonina and Elena Dee take the leading roles of Violetta and Mimi, while “ladies’ favourite” Andriy Perfilov is Alfredo and Rodolfo. They are joined by a 70-strong company including tenor Ruslan Zinevych, who has sung with Pavarotti and performed Ellen’s operas at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

La Traviata

Sung in Italian with English subtitles, La Traviata is Verdi’s outstanding interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th Century – La Dame aux Camelias. A tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music, it is based on a true story and it tells of the life and love of the passionate but consumptive Violetta. Highlights include the Brindisi, the best-known drinking song in opera, the duet Un Di Felice and the haunting aria Addio Del Passato.

Win tickets for a good laugh at the Hub

Tom Glover - an up and coming new act and promoter. In his short career Tom has appeared at the Exeter, Swanage and Bath Comedy Festivals and set up his own comedy nights in Lyme Regis, Dorset and Axminster, Devon.
Samuel Warner has been performing stand up comedy since April 2010 and within 18 months Jack had established himself on London’s open-mic circuit, and has performed more than 280 gigs across the UK. New Comedian of the Year 2011 – finalist.

Professor of Phonetics, Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a comment on women’s independence, packaged as a romantic comedy. Critically acclaimed local theatre company, Arena Theatre, are back at the Regent Centre after their recent successes of Blue Remembered Hills, Blood Brothers and Metamorphosis.

Creative Writing Awards

Wow! Our short story competition has become so strong over the last four years that we have decided to introduce two extra categories enabling more writers to take part.
Plus, in our 10th year in business, we are changing the title to the mags4dorset Creative Writing Awards.
This means we will be giving away more prizes and extending the platform to reach more writers.
The categories are:
Short Story; Poetry up to 30 lines; Article

The themes for 2012 are:
Short Story 1,000 words: Losing it
Poetry: up to 30 lines - open
Article 850 words: An accolade. This could be to a famous local person in Dorset or Hampshire – for example an architect, poet, writer, nurse, wildlife enthusiast, artist and can be a person out of the history books or someone contemporary. It could also be an accolade to an unsung hero. One photograph can be included.

Short Story 1st prize - £150 plus publication in any of our magazines, which includes publication on the website where the magazines can be downloaded.
Poem 1st prize - £50 plus publication as stated above.
Article 1st prize- £75 plus publication as stated above.
Close date for all categories is Friday, 7 September 2012.
Entry Fees:
Short Story - £4 per story, £6 for two, £8 for three (max)
Poetry – up to four poems £4
Article – up to two articles £4

RULES:
1. The themes for 2012 must be followed.
2. Word lengths are a guideline, but please stick close to them. Poetry must not exceed 30 lines.
3. All content must be your own work and your entry must not have been published, won a prize anywhere else or be entered for another competition at the same time.
4. Give your entry a title, but do not put your name on it. Ensure a covering sheet with the title of your work(s) and your name and address is included with your entry.
5. Entries will not be returned, so please keep your own copy.
6. The correct entry fee must be submitted.
7. No email or handwritten entries are permitted.
8. Fill in an entry form. Photocopies accepted.
9. Close date is Friday, 7 September 2012.

mags4dorset recipe competition!

As we enter our 10th anniversary year, mags4dorset is holding a recipe competition

We want our Dorset readers to write recipes for sweet or savoury dishes so we can create a 4Dorset recipe selection.

Please submit a photograph of the finished dish. Email entries are acceptable using the address: editorial@mags4dorset.co.uk otherwise please send your recipe and photograph to the editor, mags4dorset, 1st Floor, King Geo V Pavilion, Peter Grant Way, Ferndown, Dorset BH22 9EN.

We know there are a lot of fabulous cooks out there and we would love to publish your recipes. The only rule is that the recipe must be your own creation. “We shall enjoy testing the recipes before deciding which ones to publish,” says editor, Janine Pulford.

There is no entry fee and you can enter as many recipes as you like. Make sure you include your name address and telephone number on the entry.

£20 will be paid for each recipe published. The creator will retain copyright, but mags4dorset reserves the right to use the winning recipes in any of its publications at any time and to post them on the website.
