Residents are being encouraged to go compost crazy this spring with the introduction of brand new compost bin offers for Dorset.
Last year around 900 residents took advantage of the great compost bin offers available. To help more people put their scraps to good use, Dorset councils have teamed up with bin manufacturer Straight Plc to provide a range of compost bins, kitchen caddies and water butts at bargain prices.
The two most popular - 220 and 330 litre – compost bins are priced at £14 and £17 respectively (a saving of £8 and £6 on last years offer), plus £5 home delivery charge. There is also a buy one get one half-price offer on these two bins.
Home composting is an inexpensive, natural process which is much better for the environment than sending uncooked kitchen and garden waste to landfill, where it can generate methane – a greenhouse gas more powerful than carbon dioxide.
Steve Burdis, Dorset County Council’s head of waste management, said:
“Dorset residents are renowned for being excellent recyclers but more and more are also home composting – more than half of households with gardens in the county now do it. The great thing about choosing to compost at home is that it requires relatively little effort, and is suitable for everyone.
“Far from needing specific ingredients, you could be surprised about how much of the contents of your normal household bin can actually be composted. Fruit and vegetable peelings, dead flowers, grass cuttings, egg shells, pet hair, coffee granules, toilet roll innards and teabags are all suitable. Even old shredded bank statements and bills can be added to your compost bin.“
