Celebrity chef Lesley Waters took time out to spend a special day holding the first cookery session for the siblings of Julia’s House children, hosted at Castle Court School on 15 March.
At Lesley’s invitation, seven children aged 12-15 years attended the cookery session for which Lesley supplied all of the ingredients. With Lesley’s coaching, the group learned how to cook a delicious feast, tackling recipes for naan breads, lamb burgers with relish, chili coconut chicken kebabs with Tzatziki and finally, Eton Mess dessert.
The event was voted an outstanding success and lots of fun by the children who attended.
Alysha, aged 14, said; “Lesley’s fun and makes cooking fun,” while Tabby, aged 13, said; “I’ve learnt lots of new techniques, including how to crush garlic properly!”
Alex, aged 15, added; “It makes me want to go back home and cook. If I can do it here I can do it at home. I’d love to do it again.”
Following the success of the event, Lesley has offered to run a cookery session for children at Julia’s House in Corfe Mullen.
She commented: “It was an amazingly busy day and the young people did extraordinarily well to cook so much in one session - they are a great team of talented young chefs.”
The Julia’s House Sibling Support Programme was launched in 2007 and focuses on the needs of siblings who have a brother or sister with a life threatening illness. A variety of events are planned, which put the focus on the sibling, enabling them to feel special, have fun and the chance to have a carefree day.
Headmaster of Castle Court, Richard Nicholl commented: “We are very proud of our strong connection with Julia’s House and were really pleased to be able to provide Lesley with the use of our kitchens for this cookery day. The Siblings Program is such a valuable part of the team’s work at Julia’s House and we are committed to supporting it.”
