A total of 100,000 people have been arrested and charged across the UK because of the anonymous information passed to Crimestoppers since it was formed in 1988.
Crimestoppers is an independent charity that offers the public the opportunity to pass on information about crimes for free and anonymously.
Richard Daubeney, Chairman of Dorset Crimestoppers, said: “I’m delighted to announce that since 1996, as a result of information given anonymously by the public in Dorset, 406 people have been arrested for offences including serious assault, burglary, theft and the cultivation of illegal drugs.
“This vital information has helped the police make Dorset one of the safest counties to live in.”
Detective Superintendent Colin Stanger, Director of Intelligence, said: “The policing of Dorset can only be undertaken with the support of our community.
“The arrests that have been made have come from information supplied directly by individuals via Crimestoppers, showing the support that Dorset Police receives and also the invaluable service that Crimestoppers provides.
“The support of Crimestoppers and the bravery of individuals to come forward and report crime have helped to make Dorset one of the safest counties to live in.”
Members of the public can contact Crimestoppers by phoning 0800 555 111 – mobile phone tariffs may apply – or by visiting their website www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
In an emergency, where a crime is in progress or life is at risk, the public should dial 999. The public can also contact Dorset Police to report crimes or make enquiries by phoning 01202 or 01305 22 22 22.
