Wimborne Town Council’s CCTV camera in the Square captured a vandal red handed in the early hours of Saturday 19 December as he damaged the Christmas tree and its lights.

The council was concerned that the damage was irreparable, but builder Tim Rainford of Rainford Builders came to the rescue and after effecting repairs, Wimborne was lit up again in time for Christmas.

Audition for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

The Bournemouth Shakespeare Players are presenting their 32nd Annual Shakespeare in the Priory House Gardens in Christchurch in July 2010. Following the success of last year's production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ they are embarking on their production of William Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet.’

This play is possibly the most famous love story of all. It has spanned the generations and has been performed and filmed many times including the musical ‘West Side Story.’ The story is so universal that it has been set in many different periods both modern and historical.

Auditions will be held on Monday 11 and Friday 15 January 2010 at St Joseph’s Hall, corner of Archway Road and Bournemouth Road, Parkstone, Poole at 7.45pm.

All parts are available and backstage help is also needed. You are asked to read the play before the audition, but there is no requirement for you to have acted in a Shakespeare play before.

The company always welcomes new members and there are plenty of jobs to do to get the play in to production. If you are interested in auditioning or helping backstage with everything from props, costumes to set building then come along on Monday and Friday. If you would like any further information please telephone (01202) 534776 or e-mail bsp75@btinternet.com.

Police warn businesses following spate of burglaries

Officers across Dorset are working with local businesses to raise awareness of commercial burglary, following a spate of crimes in the county.

Since May 2009, there have been 25 commercial burglaries (all non-residential burglaries, primarily shops and garages) the majority of which occurred at Christchurch and Bournemouth-based businesses.

Acting Chief Inspector Michael Mullen, who is leading the investigation into the burglaries, said: “In some instances, the burglars are believed to have been posing as BT engineers in florescent jackets.

“In the majority of cases, the offenders have disabled the alarm/telephone wires.

“We are encouraging shop and garage owners to ensure that if they attend an alarm activation at their premises that they make contact with the police irrespective of whether a burglary has occurred or not.”

Police are issuing the following advice to the business community in relation to the investigation:

Be aware of any interruption to telecom systems, line or alarm faults.
Be vigilant in respect of people seen in the immediate vicinity of your business.
Be aware of bogus callers and always ask for ID.
In the event of an alarm activation, the key holder must immediately contact the police.

Acting Chief Inspector Mullen, continued: “We want to work with businesses to help prevent them from becoming victims of crime”

Snow Stopping Neal as Basingstoke grinds to a halt

Whilst many motorists were beaten by the Arctic conditions that swept through Basingstoke earlier this week, there was to be ‘snow’ stopping Neal White as he battled the blizzards to get home... in his wheelchair.

Faced with traffic chaos outside Mercedes-Benz of Basingstoke’s Houndmills showroom, where he is employed as Workshop Controller, Neal displayed an ice cool temperament and a steely determination to overcome the elements and complete his three-mile homeward journey to Chineham.

“As I couldn’t get my Vauxhall out of the car park, the choice was to wait for the traffic and bad weather to subside but as there seemed no chance of either, I decided that the only way to get home was under my own steam,” said Neal, who has been in a wheelchair since breaking his back in a motocross accident 15 years ago.

Accompanied by colleague and fellow Chineham resident, Technician Adam Love, the intrepid duo made their great escape, overtaking gridlocked motorists to reach their destination in just one hour and 10 minutes.

“For most of the journey, Adam was hanging onto the back of my wheelchair and skating behind me and there was only one place where he had to assist me getting up a high kerb,” recalled Neal. “It was hard going in places – particularly on paths where the snow had not been disturbed by cars or pedestrians and I had to ‘wheely’ to get through.

“If my wheelchair had got some of the features like the latest Mercedes-Benz have, such as ESP (Electronic Stability Program) or anti-lock brakes, I may well have got home even sooner,” he smiled. “Nevertheless I’m glad I took the decision to battle the elements as I was back home with friends and enjoying a refreshing pint hours before many of my colleagues had reached their houses.”

Paul Thrower, Mercedes-Benz of Basingstoke’s After Sales Director, said: “As he has shown in the seven years that he has been with us, Neal has never been one to be held back not even by the worst weather conditions that some of us have ever seen. His determination to achieve the goals he sets himself is an inspiration to us all.”

Royal British Legion bosses call time on Verwood Legion

Despite a massive programme of work to make the case for keeping the Verwood New Legion Club open, the London-based trustees of the Royal British Legion (RBL) have confirmed that the club will close in mid-February, 2010.

The “Save The Legion Campaign” had spent a huge amount of time, money and effort in putting together a detailed Three Year Business Plan demonstrating the club’s ability to be run profitably. Despite professional input and a commitment to increasing local charitable support, the plan – delivered exactly on time to the Legion Trustees, as requested - couldn’t shift them from their closure stance.

“The RBL’s decision to close the club is extremely short-sighted” says chair of the club’s recently-formed management committee, Brian Giddings. “All the way through our negotiations with RBL head office, it became increasingly clear that we were setting the agenda and fighting possible closure against a background of centralised apathy and a total lack of interest in the implications of closure for the local community. It’s disastrous news - for the club, for the hard-working staff and for the residents of Verwood and its surrounding areas.”

The Moorland Road club premises – expensively refurbished only three years ago – will be shuttered and left empty. As a result, the growing 16,000+ community of Verwood loses yet another of its few social amenities, and waves goodbye to the excellent, inexpensive facilities enjoyed by local groups and residents.

“I feel so sorry for those groups that have supported our work,” says Alan Dorey, founder of the Save The Legion Campaign. “Whether it's sports clubs, the U3A, disabled groups or members hiring the facilities, there‘s now a massive hole in the heart of Verwood. Once the club goes, it’ll be pretty much impossible to replace it.”

At a time when the Legion’s charitable work has a greater focus and awareness than for many years, this particular closure is unnecessary and unwarranted. “The risk to the Legion in leasing the premises to us,” concluded Brian, “would be minute; the gain to the community would be huge. Now, that chance is lost for good. We’ve all tried our hardest, and we sincerely thank everyone who helped, and believed in a positive outcome.”

The fate of the club has been blamed on the economic downturn, changes in drinking habits as well as the smoking ban. The Royal British Legion will offer the Verwood site for sale. A spokesperson from the RBL said, “The closure decision will serve to ensure that the Legion makes best use of its resources to continue to safeguard the interests of the Serving and ex-Service community.”

‘Catch and release’ from 1 January

ALL fishing in the Lower Stour and Christchurch Harbour is to change to ‘catch and release’ from January 1 as part of a crackdown on illegal angling.

A fall in the stocks of sea trout, bass and mullet over the last decade has been blamed on an increase in illegal fishing by rod and line and netting.

Anglers visiting the area are estimated to contribute more than £5 million to the Christchurch economy with bed and breakfast, food and drink and angling related purchases also benefiting.
But there are fears that that this figure will be hit – and fish stocks continue to decline – unless urgent action is taken to tackle illegal fishing.

Now Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water (BWHW) and Ringwood and District Angling Association is to take over joint management of the Lower Stour and Harbour from January 1.

A number of changes are to take effect from that date including changing all fishing to a ‘sports fishery’, ie catch and release.

Mike Rhodes, BWHW’s Property and Recreational Services Manager, said: “This is the only practical way forward and means species are returned to the water for the benefit of both the angler and the economy of Christchurch.

“Fishing ‘catch and release’ is practised on many major sport fisheries across the world. It is something some fisheries need if we want to secure angling and fish stocks for future generations.
”The option of letting anglers take the odd fish ‘for the pot’ was considered but this would have made it difficult to bailiff.” The effects of the scheme will be reviewed each year.

The decision to designate the Lower Stour and Harbour as a ‘sports fishery’ has been welcomed by the National Mullet Club (NMC) and Ringwood and District Angling Association (RDAA).
Steve Smith, NMC Chairman, said its catch records indicated a steady decline in grey mullet.

He added: “The Christchurch Harbour mullet fishery is of national importance for recreational anglers. Having urged its protection over a number of years, we are pleased to see it safeguarded in this way.”

Peter Hutchinson, RDAA Chairman, said the association looked forward to returning the Lower Stour and Harbour to “its once famous position in the angling world.”

“The Lower Stour requires extremely efficient bailiffing to reduce the amount of non-permit holders poaching the water. Improved general upkeep and maintenance of this water is also desperately required and RDAA already has plans in place to deal with these problems from January 1,” he said.

“Christchurch Harbour also suffers and RDAA has committed to assist BWHW to reduce poaching and illegal fishing, improving and protecting fry nursery areas and general fish stocks. By doing so, we will be returning this harbour to one of the premier sports fisheries in the country, both for coarse and sea species.”

Other changes from January 1, 2010, include the introduction of boat fishing licences which are only available from BWHW. Fishermen who wish to fish from a boat must now purchase a boat fishing licence at a cost of £60 per annum. Application forms are available from BWHW. New arrangements for day tickets for casual fishermen are now available from Davis Tackle shop on Bargates.

BWHW is also introducing free day tickets for children under 12 years of age in order to encourage youngsters to try the sport.

Be prepared for winter advises water company

With the arrival of colder weather, Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water (BWHW) has issued some timely advice for householders and businesses.

It includes:

Make sure you know where your inside water stop tap is and ensure it works.

If you have dripping taps and faulty ball valves they can be a problem. Waste pipes and overflows can freeze causing flooding inside the premises. Replace faulty washers now and save water in the meantime.

Avoid frozen or burst pipes by protecting them with lagging. This is especially the case in exposed areas where freezing draughts can reduce temperatures.

To prevent freezing keep installations warm by leaving some heating on if the temperature is likely to drop below freezing for sometime.

Lag the storage cistern and any pipes that are liable to freeze, especially if they are in the roof space of a building.

Leave the heating on if your premises are left empty over a weekend or holiday period. The cost will be far less than the potential expense of clearing up any flood damage from a burst pipe.

Protect all external taps or supplies that may be affected by frost. Ideally isolate them if they are not in use and drain them down.

If you have a frozen pipe, and you know its location, try to get some warmth around it. An electric fan heater can be used but ensure there is no damp or risk of leaking water which could result in an electric shock. Never use naked flames or hot air guns as these could pose a fire risk.

If you have a burst pipe, turn off the supply and then drain down the part of the system affected. You will need a plumber to repair the burst. If you cannot turn off the supply, ring us and we will turn off the boundary stop tap.

Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water do not repair customer’s internal pipes but can isolate the water supply at the boundary stop tap. You will need to employ a plumber to repair any bursts caused by the freezing weather or you can contact AquaCare on 01202 591100. AquaCare is Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water’s sister company which provides 24 hour emergency plumbing services. .

Roger Harrington, BWHW’s Technical Director said: “Frozen or burst pipes can cause major headaches for customers. A few basic steps can avoid these problems.

“The simple fact is that a little time spent on preparing for the cold spell could save a lot of time dealing with the after effects of a flood resulting from a burst pipe.”

Tropical crab found on Dorset beach

Recent storms and strong south-westerly winds have brought some unusual visitors to Dorset’s beaches. Tropical crabs, birds blown off course and rare barnacles are some of the wildlife reported by Dorset Wildlife Trust.

Six rare types of goose barnacle have washed up along the coast in recent weeks, including one, Conchoderma virgatum, which Dorset Wildlife Trust staff have nicknamed, the ‘pyjama barnacle’ because of its covering of stripy skin.

Julie Hatcher, Dorset Wildlife Trust Marine Officer, said: “These animals normally spend their lives in warmer waters, drifting around the oceans of the world, hitching a lift on any floating debris, whether it be mats of seaweed, bird feathers or plastic bottles.”

Very rarely, other oceanic hitch-hikers find their way to our coastline; a tropical Columbus crab has been found by local marine expert Lin Baldock on Ringstead beach. This is only the second time in 100 years that Columbus crabs have been found here. They made national news in 2006, when around 30 of them were discovered in Dorset, following extremely stormy conditions.

Among the birds driven by the storms was a grey phalarope, a wading bird blown off course as it headed for the southern oceans from its Arctic breeding grounds. It was seen surfing the waves and picking tiny bugs from the water’s surface just below Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Fine Foundation Marine Centre. Birds, including puffins and petrels that are normally far out to sea, have also been washed up dead, battered by wind and waves and unable to feed.

Julie Hatcher added: “Now is the time to get out on the beach and search among the strandline. After such a stormy period, you never know what creatures you may turn up, and it may even be something never recorded in Dorset before. Take photos and send them to Dorset Wildlife Trust for recording. The more we know about what’s out there, the better we will be able to protect it.”

Send your marine sightings to kimmeridge@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk or ring 01929 481044.

As well as housing the new police station, the building also provides a new Community Area Command for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and office accommodation for Dorset Police staff.

The Fire Service's Director of Service Delivery, Area Manager Nick Marsden, who joined Chief Superintendent Hart in opening the new police station, said: "I was very pleased to be involved in the opening of the new police and fire community building this morning in Poole.

“This building has provided Dorset Fire and Rescue Service with a modern and efficient base to operate from which will further strengthen our close partnership working with Dorset Police and other organisations. This can only help us to work closer together to improve the safety of our communities".

The Poole Civic Centre police station is due to be put up for sale in the New Year.

45 arrested in Dorset’s drink driving campaign

Forty-five drivers across Dorset have been arrested for alcohol or drug related driving offences during the first two weeks of this year’s Christmas drink drive campaign which comes to an end on New Year's Day.

Of those arrested, twenty-two drivers have been charged and a further 11 drivers have been released on police bail while police enquiries continue.

And, if convicted, those drivers face a minimum of 12 months ban, up to six months imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000 and a criminal record.

Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, of the Dorset Police Operations Division, said: “I'm pleased to see that the arrests so far this December are twenty per cent lower than for the same period last year.

"That said, we still face the bulk of the party season which is likely to see a rise in the number of drivers willing to risk their own and others lives by continuing to drink and drive.

"Officers across Dorset will continue to actively detect offences, including targeting specific individuals with a history of drinking and driving and through road checks. Any driver involved in an accident faces a breath test regardless of fault.

"Of particular concern to Dorset Police are drivers under the age of 30 who represent half of those arrested.

"I would ask friends and parents to do all that they can to prevent young drivers from getting behind the wheel after having a drink. There are always alternative means to travel given a little planning.

“If you are going out for a social drink over the festive period, then plan ahead to make sure you can get home safely and without having to drive yourself. Take simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation.

“I’d also urge the public not to get into a vehicle if you think the driver has been drinking and report this driver to Dorset Police.

“We have had excellent support from the public during previous campaigns and once again we want anyone who suspects that a vehicle is being driven by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs to contact Dorset Police immediately - by dialling 999 – so that officers can intercept the vehicle.”

Members of the public can also call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, where mobile phone tariffs may apply, or the Dorset Police non-emergency number on 01202 or 01305 22 22 22.

More than 250 year nine pupils from eight secondary schools tried a range of activities linked to diplomas including staging a fashion show, robotic programming and planning a marketing campaign.

The event at AFC Bournemouth was designed to give the youngsters and parents a realistic insight into the new qualification, and discover which careers it opens up.

“They were all very enthusiastic and excited, and interested in what careers diplomas lead to,” said Caroline Foster, 14-19 strategic leader for the conurbation.

From next September eleven diploma subjects will be available across Bournemouth and Poole. Young people can choose one as part of their year 10 and 11 options or for post-16 study.

Designed to be a flexible qualification, they can be studied at school or college and are different from GCSEs and A-levels because practical and work experience is built into the curriculum.

For more details about diplomas visit www.14-19matters.co.uk or call (01202) 652692.

If you need to spend a penny – go to Christchurch

Whilst being told of its winning five star and four star loos some weeks ago, it was only after the recent Awards Ceremony that the Borough Council found out the good news that it had only been beaten by Highland Council and Brighton & Hove Council, both of whom have many more public toilets that Christchurch.
Christchurch has now gone up from seventh place last year to third place in the Premier League and has also received a Standard of Excellence Award in the Champions League.

This Award is presented to any organisation or local authority with ten or more entries and winning five or more 5 Star Awards and who, in the opinion of the Inspectors, are maintaining a consistently high standard of management in all their Loo of the Year Awards entries.

In addition to these accolades, Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre was named Category Winner for England in the Leisure and Recreation category. Highcliffe Castle also gained a 5 star award.

Cllr Sally Derham Wilkes, chairman of Christchurch Council’s Community Services Committee, said: “To come third in the whole country is a tremendous achievement for Christchurch and means that we’ve beaten some previous big players like Westminster and Blackpool.

“It’s great to know that the many visitors to our town, as well as our residents, can be sure of a pleasant experience when they need to use our public toilets. I would like to thank the Council officers responsible as well as the contractors and suppliers who have helped us achieve this, including Wettons, Cleanrite, 2 Counties Cleaning and Rescue Rod, for all their hard work. It really is a team effort.”

VAT Rate’s Return Bad News For Business

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is calling for a delay in the return of the rate of VAT back to 17.5per cent, saying it is bad timing and bad for business. The FSB says that the timing of VAT rise - from its current 15 per cent due on New Year’s Day, will leave small firms with very little to celebrate. The Government is being urged to delay the rise until 1st February. As well as helping to keep tills ringing after the festive season this would be an easier time to administer all the price changes and updates. The British Retail Consortium, a lobby group for shop owners, is also pressing hard for the 2.5% rise to be delayed.

Chairman of the Wessex Region, Ken Moon, said: “Chancellor Darling has little to lose by delaying the restoration of the 17.5 per cent VAT rate for just one month, but this would help retailers during the January sales season. He might even be tempted to postpone the increase until after the next election, when it might not be his problem.”

Alistair Darling cut VAT to 15% in his 2008 pre-Budget report to help prop up consumer spending in the run-up to last Christmas. However, there are mixed opinions on the impact of the cut. The think tank Centre for Economic and Business Research claimed it boosted sales by £2.1 billion in the six months to April 2009 but the FSB said it had failed to lift sales for 97% of its members.

Spring Sporting Auction Sale

A wonderful collection of fishing items are to be auctioned by Lawrences of Crewkerne in their Spring Sporting Sale in April next year.

The items were collected by a gentleman in Bournemouth over a 30 year period.

Over 150 antique fishing reels and over 70 antique fishing rods are included. The reels include legendary makers such as Hardy, Allcocks, Sharpes and Farlows. Estimates range from £20-£200.

Also being auctioned at the same sale are two very unusual Cecil Aldin Royal Doulton plates.

Both are decorated with caricatures of dogs from original designs by Cecil Aldin.

Cecil Aldin was born in 1870, and is best known for his paintings of animals and rural life. His first drawings were published by the graphic in 1891. His illustrations include the original 1893 magazine publications of the Jungle Book, and the 1910 edition of Pickwick papers. He also published a short series of fully illustrated books in 1923, Old Manor Houses and Inns.

Drawing on the popularity of Aldins designs, Royal Doulton produced a series of plates called "Aldins Dogs". They were first made in the 1920's and were produced in relatively small numbers.

Lawrences Auctioneer Simon Jones said, "This is the first time I have seen these designs before. These plates will appeal to both Royal Doulton collectors, and Cecil Aldin enthusiasts."

The plates are expected to make £100-200.

For further information please contact Simon Jones on 01460 73041.

FSB response to Chancellor’s Pre-Budget Report

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) welcomed measures by the Chancellor to give small businesses a helping hand by extending finance to small firms and calling off a 1p rise in small companies’ Corporation Tax in his pre-budget report.

Extending the £1.3 billion Enterprise Finance Guarantee fund for businesses looking for new finance – a victory for the FSB last year– is a welcome step the FSB has called for and shows that the Government has been listening to small firms’ finance needs.

However, at this difficult time, the Government should be making it as easy as possible for small firms to recruit new staff and the FSB is disappointed that this budget was not focused on providing incentives or assistance to the smallest firms that want to take on more staff and so tackle the rising problem of unemployment. Going ahead with the proposed 0.5 per cent increase in employers’ National Insurance Contributions will not encourage job creation within the small firm sector.

Commenting on the following areas, the FSB’s Wessex regional Chairman said:

Enterprise Finance Guarantee:

“Extending the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme, which we called for last year and has seen more than £600 million lent out to just over 6,000 businesses, is a welcome move, although we wanted to see the scheme extended indefinitely and promoted further to help small firms get much-needed access to finance.

“The Government has missed a chance to really tackle a difficult credit market by failing to create more options for access to finance, and more competition among high street banks. The Government should have addressed this challenge and looked at options such as a regional stock exchange to help small and fast growing businesses capture finance.”

Tax:

“Holding off the planned 1p rise in small companies’ Corporation Tax is a victory for the FSB and will give small companies a real helping hand, giving them the chance to expand and invest, and to grow out of the recession with confidence. In the FSB-ICM ‘Voice of Small Business’ Annual Survey, 26 per cent said a cut on this business tax would improve their economic prospects. It will also save small firms more than £300 million over the next year and give them more of a chance to take on new staff.

“Lowering tax to 10 per cent on all profits derived from patents is good news for innovative businesses and will encourage entrepreneurialism.”

Employment:

“Raising National Insurance by a half of one per cent in 2011 is an attack on jobs and shows a real lack of vision from the Government on tackling the key challenge of rising unemployment. In a survey of FSB members this year, 44 per cent said a cut in payroll taxes would help them take on more staff, so this is extremely damaging for employment in the UK. While unemployment continues to rise, it is unaccountable that the Government hasn’t considered a new approach, such as a National Insurance rebate for new jobs in small firms. This pre-budge report should have encouraged and rewarded job creation in 2010, rather than imposed this tax.”

Annette Brooke MP has written to Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to inform him of the fact that and ask if action can be taken.

According to local reports in the press and by the Dorset Wildlife Trust they contain an ‘estimated 1 million tonnes’ of oil and are said to be moored their waiting for the international price of crude to increase.

The oil tankers are moored near Lyme Bay on the Dorset-Devon boarder.

Annette said, “My concern is for the safety of what is a unique area of coastline with numerous rare and endangered species and the significant implications that an environmental disaster would have on them, not to mention the economic cost to the region.”

Annette believes that questions must be asked about the soundness of the decision to use a world heritage site as a storage area for such vessels.

Munro’s Mariners kayak challenge completed

Following in the footsteps of the brave Second World War commandos, Munro’s Mariners have completed a 70-mile charity kayaking expedition in France – in memory of highly respected Dorset Police Inspector Neil Munro.

The team of 21 officers and staff from Dorset Police – known as Munro’s Mariners - took to the water on 28 November from Pointe de Grave, the most northern point of the Gironde River in south-west France.

The team then kayaked 70 miles over four days along the Gironde and Garonne rivers, finishing at Blaye, near Bordeaux, on 1 December – retracing the route taken by commandos in the daring Second World War Operation Frankton against German battleships in Bordeaux harbour in December 1942.

The majority of the team returned home the following day. However, expedition member and Dorset Police Superintendent, Mick Rogers, PC Gary Jones and the High Sheriff of Dorset Vicky McDonaugh stayed on to complete the 103-mile walk originally completed by the ‘Cockleshell Heroes’ of Operation Frankton.

The patron of Munro’s Mariners, the High Sheriff of Dorset, has been a strong supporter of the team and has helped the group so far raise £8,700 towards their target of £10,000 for three local charities, the Special boat Service Association, the Neo-natal Unit at Poole Hospital and the Dorset Police Benevolent Fund.

Expedition member and Dorset Police Superintendent, Mick Rogers, said: “It was a great challenge and we met some wonderful people – we even stayed with relatives of Second World War Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the Cognac area of France.

“I and the rest of the team are very proud and pleased that we completed a very physically and mentally gruelling challenge in memory of a very fine and highly respected police officer. I’d like to thank the many people who have supported us.”

The expedition was staged in memory of Inspector Neil Munro, who tragically died last year. His final posting was to north Bournemouth where he was based at Winton police station.

The Gnostics Breakthrough at Forest FM

THE GNOSTICS is the latest band to be chosen as the Breakthrough band of the month by Forest FM. The award includes daily airplay throughout December and a live concert at the New Legion.

This Poole-based indie-folk five-piece band mightily impressed Forest FM with their songs and musicianship.

Based around the core song-writing duo of guitarists Simon and Steve, they have been augmented in the last year with Andy on drums, Ollie on violin and Tom on double-bass.

The band produces a tight-knit acoustic sound. With acknowledged influences including the Beatles – and a band sound that takes elements of Crowded House and Lindisfarne and creates something unique out of it – they play an infectious style of music.

Live, they are something else – and Forest FM would strongly recommend their latest album, ‘The Book Of Malcolm.’ They’ll be playing numbers from it – plus some new material too - at their headline concert on 12 December at The New Legion in Verwood. Another Breakthrough winner, Mary Spender will aslo be performing.

Tickets are only £4 – on the door, or in advance from The Musical Bus on 01425-483105. Students (with an NUS card) and 14-18 year olds £3.00 – great value for a great night out. Doors open at 8pm.

Jamie Oliver move over…

Daisy Woodley-Facer from West Moors Middle School took second and Timothy Sims from Ferndown Upper was third.

Just half a point separated the top two slots. In fact, so close was the race, the judges, including professional chef Jason Coppard and hotelier Tony Perella, had to return to the kitchen during their deliberations to confirm their findings before announcing the final result.

In the end, a sea bass fillet starter with sweet red pepper and tomato concasse sauce vierge followed by a main course of pennoni rigati with chicken, broccoli and chilli and a sweet of mini lemon and chocolate cheesecakes clinched it for Alex.

He and Daisy move on to the next round of the competition at Ferndown Upper School on 9 January 2010. It will involve pupils from up to six other local schools, with subsequent district and regional heats culminating in a Great Britain and Ireland final to be staged in April next year. The ultimate winner will receive a cheque for £250 plus a trip to Italy.

Speaking at the presentation, Vice President of Ferndown Rotary Club, Keith Puttick said: “That just six marks separated all eight participants showed how high the overall standard was.

“Perhaps even more remarkable is the achievement by Daisy Woodley-Facer and her colleague from West Moors Middle School Lina Fail. Year 8 pupils, they excelled in a field of otherwise Year 11 students.’”

“Suffice to say, I would be only too delighted to eat in any establishment having a kitchen staffed by any of the chefs from this heat of Rotary Young Chef - they’re all winners in my book.”

Open to anyone of secondary school age, Rotary Young Chef, sponsored by Filippo Berio Olive Oil, gives young people the chance to show off their creative culinary talents, to promote healthy eating and to learn important life skills.

Participants are allowed £14.00 to buy the main ingredients for a healthy three course meal for two, the meal to be produced within a specified time and presented on table place settings designed and laid by them. The young chefs are judged on their healthy menu, planning and organisational skills and, of course, the taste and presentation of the final dishes.

Highly commended Forest FM

Verwood’s community radio station Forest FM has been declared Runner Up and received a ‘highly commended’ citation from the Radio Academy Southern branch for the ‘Station of the Year’ awards in the South.

Designed to honour radio stations broadcasting to a population of 300,000 or under – the awards recognise the vital role that independent radio plays in the UK.

Forest FM was one of three stations nominated across the South of England and was up against Isle Of Wight Radio and Andover Sound.

The ceremony - held at Bournemouth University on December 1 - was hosted by Professor Sean Street, director of the Centre for Broadcasting History Research, together with veteran regional radio presenter, Matt Hopper.

Professor Street noted that, "For the first time - we've added an extra award, a Highly Commended citation for a station that represents all that's good about truly local radio.”

Forest FM was praised for its wide variety of music output, its local focus and its championing of the community it serves.

Receiving the award, station manager Steve Saville commented, "As a community station up against larger commercial broadcasters, we were just delighted to be nominated and thrilled to be considered. But to be officially recognised - that's something really special. It’s all thanks to our forty or so local volunteers."

Andover Sound took the top prize and will be automatically entered for the national Sony award.

Robert Walter MP (North Dorset) supported Ordnance Survey’s Free maps for 11-year-olds scheme with a visit to Allenbourn Middle School in Wimborne Minster.

Bob was delighted to once again add his endorsement to the annual Free Maps for Schools initiative, which offers every school in England a free Ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer map for each of their Year 7 pupils.

Following a quick tour of the school with Geography Co-ordinator, Martin Fitzgerald, Bob dropped in to Mrs Mallon’s Year 7 geography class to hand out a brand new 1:25 000 Shaftesbury & Cranborne Chase OS Explorer map to each pupil. Bob was also pleased to be able to contribute with his own knowledge of the map’s area, which falls at the heart of his North Dorset constituency.

The children will use the maps to kick start a new project on the study of rivers and lakes, including a very timely look at flooding and its causes.

1967 Wolseley 110 sells for £5,900

Lawrences Auctioneers of Crewkerne auctioned a 1967 Wolseley 1100 with an early Dorset registration plate - FX33.

The bidding started at £1000 and was contested by two keen collectors. The auctioneers gavel eventually fell at £5900.

Auctioneer and Classic Car Specialist Jeff Day said "What made this vehicle so interesting was it all the original paperwork. It's a very good price for a car of this age and condition. The registration number obviously added to the cars value."

Grant for better access to Ringwood playground

“The best children’s play area in the town, but probably the worst access,” commented county councillor Steve Rippon-Swaine adding, “I am pleased that with the aid of a £4,000 grant I am able to give from my county councillor’s fund, that will be a thing of the past. Before the schools’ Christmas holidays we will have a new hard surface and safe access for children and disabled to both the children’s play area and the skate park on Carver’s Recreation Ground. I am delighted to be able to put this money to such good use.”

The new access will allow the existing steeply sloping gravel path from the play area on to Southampton Road to be closed. The new path will be formed from the main entrance to Carvers, providing a much gentler slope up to the play area and the skate park. A motorbike inhibitor at the main entrance will deter motor cycles from gaining access, but will for the first time give good access for disabled in wheelchairs and motorised electric buggies into Carvers and therefore provide a safer route for the disabled through the recreation ground into town.
