Drivers are being reminded not to risk death, serious injury or their livelihood by getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs this festive season – as the latest arrest figures are released.
The Dorset Police Christmas drink and drug drive campaign began on Monday 1 December 2008 and will run until Thursday 1 January 2009.
Between Monday 1 December and Monday 15 December there have been 55 arrests for failed or refused breath tests – down from 78 arrests for the same period in 2007.
Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, Head of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit, said: “I’m really pleased that the number of arrests in the campaign so far has fallen as compared with last year – hopefully it means the message is hitting home and motorists are realising just how dangerous drink or drug driving is.
“However people shouldn’t be complacent – it is never acceptable to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs and we will continue to target these dangerous drivers throughout this campaign and beyond.
“Officers from the Traffic Unit and Safer Neighbourhood Teams across the Force have been undertaking a number of road-side checks and have visited local pubs to remind people of the consequences of drink or drug driving.
“In addition, throughout the campaign, every driver who is involved in a collision will be breath tested – irrespective of whether they are suspected of drink driving or not.”
Motorists are advised not to get behind the wheel after drinking any alcohol at all, Chief Inspector Nichols said: “If you are going out for a social drink over the festive period, then plan ahead to make sure you can get home safely and without having to drive yourself.
Simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation should be taken.”
