FREE trees for wildlife lovers

Dorset Wildlife Trust is giving away free trees to members on Sunday, 1 February.  The list of trees on offer includes silver birch, bird cherry, crab apple, hawthorn, field maple, hazel and rowan, all Dorset natives which will be a good addition to gardens, schools or community open spaces.  All you need to do is bring a 6” pot and compost will be provided, thanks to EcoComposting.  The saplings will be potted up on the day and should be allowed to develop a good rootball in time for planting in the autumn.

Joy Wallis, People and Wildlife Co-ordinator for Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “Native trees are a vital food source for our native insects and the fruit and flowers provide food for birds.  Some insect species rely entirely on these native trees, so this is a brilliant way for people to help their local wildlife.”

You can collect your free tree at DWT’s Brooklands Farm, Forston, near Dorchester DT2 7AA on Sunday 1 February from 1pm to 3pm and enjoy free tea and cakes too.
