A pair of small wading birds have given cause for celebration at a West Dorset nature reserve.
The small but striking ringed plovers are the first of their kind to nest in the area and have raised a family of four chicks at the Chard Junction Quarry Nature Reserve.
One year ago, the disused part of the quarry was turned into a community nature reserve and has become the perfect home for the rare breeding birds.
Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Joy Wallis, said, “This is fantastic news, showing how quarries can become wildlife havens. The birds could leave any time now for the winter, but we hope they will be back to breed here next year.”
