Composting on the waste disposal menu

Instead of the old green plastic bags, which went to landfill, the new scheme uses biodegradable paper sacks, so benefiting the environment. And instead of being collected with the refuse, like the old scheme, the new scheme will have a designated collection vehicle and day.
Collections start from 4 August. From that date, the green plastic bags can no longer be used as they will not be able to be taken to the composting facility. Any unused plastic bags can be exchanged at the Civic Offices or the Christchurch Information Centre until the end of September 2008.

The paper sacks are 36p each and are available from new and existing outlets. Grass clippings, leaves, hedge trimmings, plants, weeds and flowers can all be put in the bags.

Cllr Colin Jamieson, portfolio holder for Protecting the Environment at Christchurch Council, said: "This is a vast improvement on the previous scheme as the waste will be sent to a recycling composting centre rather than ending up in a landfill site. People have been asking for years to have a green waste recycling facility, and I am delighted to be able to launch this new scheme for residents in Christchurch."

For any enquiries about the new garden waste scheme, call 01202 495000 or email recycle@christchurch.gov.uk.
