People still find it in their hearts to donate despite credit crunch
For the last thirty-five years, members of Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Club have delivered Christmas food parcels and never have they doubted the need for them.
In December 2008, as the country dipped further into recession, 150 recipients, the majority of whom were local elderly people, were thankful for the gifts of sustenance.
Morrisons Supermarket at Verwood supplied the food. There was so much, the Lions were able to distribute two parcels to each needy person. Also, courtesy of the EON Electrical Co, everyone received two low energy light bulbs to encourage winter fuel economy.
The cost of the parcels was met from various fund-raising events through the year but especially from the generous donations made by the customers in local pubs, clubs and hotels whose landlords gave Lions permission to visit their premises for a Christmas Charity Collection.
Almost £1,100 came from this collection showing that good people can still find it in their hearts to donate to worthy causes despite the credit crunch.
Lion President John Pearson who led the distribution said, “It was wonderful to see the pleasure on the faces of people when they realised that we cared so much about them. They all welcomed the opportunity for a chat with a Lion, sometimes as much as they welcomed the food itself.”
