Royal Visit to Dorset

Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, will visit Dorset on 11 June to see four of the county’s dynamic attractions which are set to play varied but truly significant roles on the international stage.

The visit marks a major milestone in demonstrating how Dorset has come to the fore in recent years as a destination which has embraced innovation and sustainability whilst retaining its community focus.

The Queen will visit the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Weymouth seafront and Esplanade, the Tank Museum at Bovington and Goldy’s Farm Shop and Energy Centre at Lytchett Matravers.

The royal tour begins at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA). The Academy provides access to the best small boat sailing waters of anywhere in the world and is the first venue to be completed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

John Tweed, Chief Executive of the WPNSA, said: “It is an enormous honour for the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy that both The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will be coming to see the completed Olympic Delivery Authority works and the Chesil Trust ‘Sail for a fiver’ programme. On 11 June there will be a number of young people learning to sail and we hope to give a real flavour of how this facility is for the whole community, not just the competitive sailors.”

From the Academy, the Queen will sail to Weymouth Esplanade. She will visit the Georgian-style beach and seafront with all its traditional British seaside attractions including Punch and Judy, swingboats, and donkey rides. The beach will be a hive of activity and there will be a large sand sculpture of Windsor Castle.

Tom Grainger, Chief Executive of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said: “This will be a wonderful chance for the people of South Dorset to see The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. We are delighted to have the opportunity to show off one of Weymouth’s jewels. The seafront and esplanade are well known throughout the UK and we look forward to updating Her Majesty and His Royal Highness on how the area is being regenerated."

The tour will then move on to the Tank Museum at Bovington. The museum is celebrating the completion of its £16.5m Heritage Lottery Fund grant redevelopment project and will welcome The Queen to officially open its brand new exhibition and wing. The exhibition features 33 of the most important tanks in history which together bring the story of the tank and its servicemen to life.

The Royal Couple will tour the exhibitions and meet some of the veterans whose stories have been captured and, following the formal opening of the new building, will be treated to a short live tank action display.

The final visit of the day will be to Goldy’s Farm Shop and Energy Centre where Her Majesty The Queen will open the new Energy Centre – the enterprise’s latest venture which brings together cutting-edge sustainable technology with traditional farming methods.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will be escorted on their tour of Goldy’s – which was winner of both the Environmental Farm Shop Award 2008 and the FARMA ‘Own & Local Award’ for 2009 – by co-directors Jenny Goldsack and Harry Banham.

Doubling up in orchid haven

Corfe Mullen Meadow is one of the last remaining sites in the county with a significant number of the endangered species. The green winged orchid thrives in undisturbed hay meadows, but numbers have been in declining due to habitat loss.

Dorset Wildlife Trust has been recording green winged orchid numbers on this small nature reserve since 1999. Fluctuating figures show numbers reaching a peak of nearly 20,000 in 2006 but dropping to only 2600 in 2008, the lowest on record. An impressive array of the flowers bloomed earlier than ever this year, with numbers showing signs of recovery, creeping back to nearly 6000, more than double the total for last year. The surveys take place in early to mid May, while the orchids are in full bloom.

The 1.6 hectare nature reserve is unimproved grassland with a rich plant diversity. It was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1994 and is carefully managed with a combination of traditional hay-meadow management and seasonal grazing. The meadow is left fallow after Christmas until hay is harvested in the summer. Ponies are then allowed to graze until mid-winter.

Nigel Brooks, Dorset Wildlife Trust Warden, said: “We would like to say that the increase is down to good management of the meadow, but, with only ten years’ data to go on, we don’t really know yet whether this is just a natural fluctuation or the start of a long term improvement. It is certainly very encouraging for us and our volunteers.”

Other species found at Corfe Mullen Meadow include the common spotted orchid, which is widespread across the UK and the southern marsh orchid, which has proved more resilient against habitat loss than the green-winged orchid. The meadow is also home to a large number of invertebrates, including the crab spider, ground beetle and weevil as well as bats, deer, foxes and small mammals.

Corfe Mullen Meadow is in Waterloo Road, Corfe Mullen, close to one of the proposed sites for large scale housing development in the Regional Spatial Strategy.

Houdini predicts FA Cup winner!

As football pundits nationwide predict who will lift the coveted FA Cup on Saturday, Houdini, a North Pacific giant octopus at the Oceanarium, is using his magical powers to foresee which team in blue will clinch the cup.

After introducing two threads of different coloured balls to his display, it’s become clear which team Houdini favours for the final.

With all eight of his ‘legs’ choosing the balls associated with Everton, Houdini is undoubtedly backing the north west team for Saturday’s final.

Renowned for the special powers he possesses, this is the first time Houdini has turned his talents to football. Normally the octopus can be found changing shape to squeeze through tubes and, like all masters of illusion, modifying his colour and texture to fade into his surroundings.

Charlotte Brown, Marketing Manager at the Oceanarium Bournemouth, said: “We knew Houdini was talented, but had no idea his skills would turn him into a leading football pundit. Now all we have to do is wait until Saturday afternoon to see if Everton fulfil Houdini’s prediction and lift the trophy.”

For further information about the Oceanarium please call 01202 311993 or visit www.oceanarium.co.uk

Police saved my life – the horrors of domestic violence

A young woman from Dorset, subjected to a series of atrocious and sickening beatings with a baseball bat by her partner, has spoken out about the ordeal and praised Dorset Police for their efforts in the investigation, which ultimately led to his conviction.

Dorset Police described the assaults on Joanna Doe, 25, from Bournemouth, as one of the most complex domestic violence cases they have ever dealt with.

Now living in another part of the country, Joanna suffered from a number of vicious beatings from John Porter, 30, of Farwell Road in Poole between 2006 and 2008.

Many of the assaults – in which Porter used a machete, baseball bat and cans of dog food to inflict injuries on Joanna - happened at a caravan site in Wareham.

Speaking for the first time in public since the frightening attacks, Joanna admitted that if she hadn’t plucked up the courage to report the assaults to the police, she may have died as a result of the endless beatings.

She said: “I was regularly beaten by John, especially when he had had a bad day at work or he’d had an argument with someone else. My stomach used to churn when I knew he was about to come home. He would take all his anger out on me and even his own dogs.

“One minute he would be really nice - giving me a cuddle and saying that he loved me - but suddenly he would change, especially if I had said something wrong or talked about my friends and family. Drink and drugs would always make the situation worse.”

Joanna explained how it was almost impossible to protect herself when she was being beaten. She said: “I would try to put my hands and arms up to protect my face and head most of the time, this wouldn’t help. He hit me so hard using various items that I wouldn’t recognise myself as I was literally battered from head to toe. I’ve had my head split open on several occasions, several broken noses, a broken jaw, broken ribs, a fractured arm, suffered cuts and severe bruising on almost every part of my body.

“The worst thing was that I was alone and John didn’t allow me to go out of the trailer, so I wasn’t able to tell anyone what I was going through. I was cut off from my friends and family, and John would threaten my family if I ever tried to leave or go anywhere else. I was also too scared to leave, as I knew he would find me and beat me even more.”

Joanna said that when she did manage to get away and contact the police, John would drive her to the police station and force her to withdraw her statements, she added: “He would threaten my family if I didn’t do what he said.”

In April 2008, after another assault which resulted in a broken arm, Joanna managed to get away to a safe place. However, John made contact with her and she went back. During this visit, Joanna was assaulted again - this time John used a baseball ball in the attack. Joanna was taken to Dorset County Hospital and the police were contacted.

The 25-year-old wishes to express her sincere thanks to the dedicated police team that worked on her case. She said: “I was so impressed with how the police dealt with the situation - from the moment John was arrested; I was their number one priority. I was put in a safe place and at all times, I felt protected and secure. Even my family were protected and reassured at every stage whilst officers kept in constant contact throughout and after the case had closed.

“I am astounded as to the length and breadth of the police’s involvement – from the protection of my family and I, keeping us informed of the investigation and getting us in touch with help, support and advice from other agencies. I would certainly advise other sufferers of domestic violence to not be frightened to tell the police – they take it extremely seriously and work tirelessly in your best interests. I have only good things to say about the officers from Dorset Police. They have literally helped save my life.”

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Stewart Dipple, said: “This was one of the most serious cases of domestic violence Dorset Police has ever dealt with. A dedicated police team spent hundreds of hours working on this time - consuming investigation - this work ultimately led to Porter’s conviction in 2009. I especially wish to thank Joanna for her brave co-operation during the investigation and court process – she gave a really excellent account when giving evidence during the trial.

“We work very closely on a daily basis with a host of other agencies including Domestic Violence co-ordinator for the local authority, social services, health and other statutory and voluntary organisations, to ensure victims are safe. We take cases of domestic violence extremely seriously and on receipt of a report, our first priority is to protect the victim and their family. We have the resources to ensure that the victim and an entire family can be protected – if needed. We can help relocate a victim to ensure protection and safety for a lifetime.

“The initial investigation involved uniformed officers from across Dorset Police but the main investigation was undertaken by a committed team of detectives from Bournemouth CID. Their achievement of dealing with this intricate and difficult case is a testament to the skill and determination of these officers.”

In 2009, Porter was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, wounding with intent and one count of intending to pervert the course of justice and one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Following a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court, a judge sentenced Porter to 16 years in jail, serving a minimum of eight years and he is subject to an indeterminate public protection order. An IPP is a new kind of open ended "life" sentence. There is no release date and the prisoner does not get out until a parole board decides he or she is no longer a risk to the public.

For more information on how to get support and advice on domestic violence – visit www.dorset.police.uk

Between April 2008 and March 2009, Dorset Police investigated 3,110 domestic violence crimes.

Turtle toy boy

To mark World Turtle Day, on Saturday May 23, the award-winning Oceanarium in Bournemouth has presented Friday, one of its rare green sea turtles, with a special new toy.

After demonstrating a curiosity for the brushes used to clean his display, staff at the seafront attraction decided to introduce the toy to Friday, as part of the creature’s ongoing environmental enrichment programme.

Oliver Buttling, Group Curator of the Oceanarium, said: “Intended primarily for dogs, the toy we’ve introduced to Friday is ideal. It’s robust, able to withstand the creature’s constant biting and chewing and satisfies his growing curiosity.”

Contributing to the worldwide celebrations for Turtle Day, the Oceanarium has also developed a new display for its many other turtles and terrapins. As well as a large underwater area, the new Ganges turtle sanctuary display also has shallow water, perfect for the creatures.

Oliver, added: “Similar to the toy we have introduced to Friday, the new area we have developed for the rest of our turtles and terrapins contributes to the environmental enrichment of the creatures.

“As well as highlighting the problems with conservation issues surrounding turtles in their natural habitats, World Turtle Day also encourages action to help the creatures thrive, which is the main point of our work here. Whether it’s introducing an unusual toy to Friday or creating a new home for our many other turtles and terrapins, we ensure the creatures in our care are given all they need to flourish.”

Knoll Gardens’ owner, Neil Lucas, also launched a new charity at the show. The Knoll Gardens’ Foundation.

The UK’s leading ornamental grass specialist, Knoll Gardens has championed the naturalistic style of gardening for many years. The new Foundation will take this remit a step further, researching, promoting and spreading a practical, sustainable gardening ethos for horticulture and garden design.

To mark the national significance of the occasion the Foundation launch was attended by environmentalist David Bellamy; one of the UK’s foremost garden designers, Cleve West, and the President of the Royal Horticultural Society, Giles Coote-Adams. Neil Lucas also handed out souvenir vials of soil taken from Knoll Gardens.

Neil Lucas said, “To my knowledge no bare soil has ever left Knoll Gardens in this way. There is an old saying that ‘the answer lies in the soil’. These few precious vials are a symbolic gesture, not only of the importance that soil plays in all our lives, but also of how we hope, through the Knoll Gardens Foundation to help address the needs of gardeners and the environment for generations to come.”

More information about the charity and Knoll Gardens is online at www.knollgardens.co.uk, or call 01202 873931.

Rogue Traders targeted in Dorset

The national day of action against doorstep callers who offer over-priced, low quality work – usually to vulnerable or elderly members of the community – took place yesterday, Wednesday 20 May 2009.

The day of action saw Dorset Police work together with Trading Standards officers from Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole – as well as representatives from the Department for Work and Pensions, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, the Environment Agency and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to target suspected rogue traders.

Vehicle intelligence, in the form of Automatic Number Plate Recognition, was used as vehicles were stopped at checkpoints set up on the two main routes into the county, on the A31 and the A35, and at other sites around Dorset.

On the day, six people were arrested. These arrests included two men from Bridport, aged 23 and 35, a 71-year-old man from Gillingham and a 36 year old man from Shaftesbury. All four of these men were arrested for trading standards offences.

Two 27-year-olds – one man and one woman, both from Poole – were arrested for drugs offences.

Advice and information about rogue trading was given to local communities through Safer Neighbourhood Teams during the course of the day, as well as to traders stopped at the vehicle check points.

Detective Superintendent Steve Bartlett said: “Doorstep crime targets some of the most vulnerable members of our communities and we are sending a clear message of our on-going commitment to stamp it out.

“In the past, rogue traders have also used their unscrupulous trade as a means of distraction burglary and Dorset Police and its partners will not tolerate these criminals who target people in their own homes.”

Victims of doorstep crime are often left feeling embarrassed about being conned or fear losing their independence and so are hesitant to contact the police.

Dorset Police is urging anyone who has experienced doorstep crime not to suffer in silence and to contact Crimestoppers anonymously if they do not feel they can talk to the police.

Crimestoppers provides a fully confidential service where crime can be reported without the necessity of leaving a name or contact number and Dorset Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.

Alternatively, consumers who have been the victim of shoddy workmanship or mis-selling should phone Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 for advice and to report the problem.

Detective Superintendent Bartlett explained: “We want to make Dorset residents feel safer in their homes and operations such as Rogue Trader specifically target bogus doorstep callers.

“We need all the information we can about these crimes – and the people behind them – to be able to act quickly and catch those responsible.”

Information from partner organisations:

Shaun Robson, Head of Environmental and Consumer Protection Services for the Borough of Poole, said: “The Trading Standards Services for Bournemouth and Poole Borough Councils and Dorset County Council are heavily involved in the fight against rogue traders, doorstep conmen and distraction burglars.

“We know that criminals will try to abuse the trust of residents and the good name of established traders across the county of Dorset including the boroughs of Poole and Bournemouth, and we are determined not to let them get a foothold in our area. We work closely together with Dorset Police and have been able to pool intelligence, which has been of particular benefit to this effective and targeted operation.”

An Environmental Crime Team spokesman, at the Environment Agency, said: "If someone is involved in one kind of crime, there's a good chance they're involved in another. We've been working in partnership with Dorset Police for some time to help identify these criminals.

“They may be involved in fly-tipping and transporting metal without a licence. They might be involved in the theft of metals from homes or things like power cables or even phone lines.

“These crimes might be small-scale, but they have a big impact on where people live. Operations like Rogue Trader are a vital tool to help us catch these criminals in the act, and ultimately to bring them to justice."

MP for North of Dorset visits British troops in Afghanistan

Bob Walter MP visited NATO forces at ISAF Headquarters in Kabul last week and met with British forces serving with NATO HQ and the Regional Command in the Kabul area.

In a 48-hour fact finding mission on the deployment of forces in Afghanistan, he flew into Kabul in his capacity as President of the European Security and Defence Assembly and was accompanied by the former Minister for the Armed Forces, Doug Henderson MP, and two French Members of Parliament.

During his visit Bob met with Lieutenant General Jim Dutton, the British deputy commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and his senior staff at ISAF HQ in Kabul. In a very packed schedule with high security, Bob also met the Afghan Minister of Defence, Abdul Rahim Wardak, and the Minister of the Interior, Ahmad Moqbel Zarar.

On Wednesday he was taken to the Kabul Military Training Centre, where allied service personnel are helping to train the Afghan Army. He later visited Camp Warehouse and met with British soldiers serving in the Regional Command Capital. He was briefed at Camp Warehouse by General Michel Stollsteiner.

Bob also met with the NATO Secretary General’s Representative, Ambassador Fernando Gentilini, the EU Special Representative, Ambassador Ettore Francesco Sequi and Christopher Alexander, the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan.

After the visit Bob said, “This was a very useful visit to meet both the NATO commanders and troops on the front line in the battle against the Taliban and other insurgent groups. Since I last visited 3 years ago the security situation has deteriorated and everywhere I went I was in tight security in body armour and armour plated vehicles.

“There are now many more troops on the ground and the Afghan Army and Police are starting to make a real contribution to their own security and stability. I am, however, very depressed by the political situation and the long term prospects. 90 per cent of the heroin on the streets of Britain still originates in Afghanistan, where the government is still plagued by corruption and criminality. There is little prospect of any economic growth in the current security environment and little prospect of any government surviving without massive western military aid and financial assistance”.

It shows what can be accomplished when two councils work together and we’re very pleased to have helped achieve this solution.

“These services will be run by Shamrock Buses on the C1/C2 route and Transdev Yellow Buses on the Burton X12 route which now be a 21 service.

The MP joined Manager Graham Jones, who has overall responsibility for the fostering service in Dorset, and Fostering Team Manager Ginny Daniells. He also met a wide range of carers based across North Dorset and members of the Foster Carers Forum who offered an insight into the challenges and huge rewards that fostering can bring.

As well as being an informative and sociable morning, Friday’s visit highlighted the national campaign to address an impending rise in the shortage of foster carers. A rise that is already impacting upon Bob’s North Dorset constituency, where more foster carers are already desperately needed.

Bob also discussed some of the issues and challenges carers face in North Dorset and praised them for their, “fantastic work and contribution.” Bob was pleased to hear about a successful bid for 100 new laptops for children in care, which will help with learning and development.

There are just over 70,000 children and young people in public care on any given day in the UK, almost 50,000 of whom live with 43,000 foster families. A report published on 11 May by the UK’s Fostering Network, entitled ‘The Age of Foster Care’, showed that around 65 per cent of all foster carers are between 50 and 80 years of age and due to retire in the next ten to 15 years. Although there is rightly no upper age limit, this will mean a worsening future for foster care if these dedicated individuals cannot be replaced.

After the visit Bob said:

“I am delighted to be able to add my voice to National Foster Carers Fortnight and to offer my support to Dorset’s Fostering Service and the carers they support.

“Being a foster carer is challenging but incredibly rewarding.

“It is vital that we all do our bit to raise awareness of the opportunities that foster care brings – for those who give care and for those who receive it – and to encourage more people to consider themselves for this important role, which can make such a difference to a young person’s life”.

West Moors: Give or Take Day

West Moors’ residents are getting another chance to get rid of small furniture and bric-a-brac they no longer need by dropping them off at the Memorial Hall from 8.30am-11.30 on 6 June.

The Give or Take community waste exchange event not only gives residents the chance to offload items they no longer require, but they can pick up anything they fancy for free. People who have nothing to give, can also browse and take items away.

The day, organised by East Dorset District Council is an opportunity to reduce waste by reusing household items instead of throwing them out.

Books, toys, clothes, tools, bric-a-brac, kitchenware, small furniture, jewellery, ornaments, bikes and bike parts, and plants are welcome, but electrical items and duvets cannot be accepted.

The event is also designed to offer advice on all aspects of reducing waste and energy use, with those attending also having the opportunity to collect free energy saving light bulbs from the Dorset Energy Advice Centre.

There will be stands featuring East Dorset's Benefits Team, Fire Service, Wayfinder and your local WRAP Home Composting Advisor. Representatives from East Dorset District Council's Waste Recycling Team will also be on hand with information on your local recycling schemes, stopping junk mail, reusable nappies and other ways to reduce your waste.

Gemma Coles, East Dorset District Council's Waste Reduction Manager said: 'We throw away far too many items that could be reused or recycled, which means that our landfill sites are nearly at capacity. The previous events have managed to save over seven tonnes of waste from ending up in landfill. Why not come along and see what takes your fancy?'

The event takes place at West Moors Memorial Hall, Station Road and runs from 9.30am to 12.30 pm, however, items may be dropped off between 8.30am and 11.30am.
Flying the flag for Dorset

The snack van in the lay-by at Woodyates on the A354 Blandford to Salisbury Road has been the salvation for many travellers for twenty years. For the past twelve months it had been flying the cheerful yellow, white and red flag - long before it was formally adopted as the Dorset flag, and Cllr Cook during his regular trips from Wimborne to Salisbury noticed that it was becoming tatty.

As someone who had promoted the adoption of the flag throughout the county during his mayoral year, and due to the fact that Wimborne Town Council was one of the first local councils to recognise the flag, Cllr Cook had long appreciated the van proprietor’s loyalty to the county. In recognition, he decided to present Dave Court with a new flag.

Dave, who together with wife Stephanie, took over the business five years ago, said he had been thinking about replacing the flag and was surprised and delighted to receive the gift from the mayor and would fly it with pride.

Mayor, Cllr Robin Cook will be succeeded today (12 May) by the mayor elect, Cllr John Burden.

Thousands flock to food fest and it isn’t over yet

The perfect early summer weather brought food lovers in their tens of thousands to the International Food Market in Christchurch at the weekend.

Forming part of the town’s 10th annual Food and Wine Festival, visitors browsed a huge variety of food and drink stalls and visited the Rangemaster Cookery Theatre for demonstrations from celebrity and local chefs.

The festival got off to a great start with the final of the Junior Cook of the Year competition, performed in front of an audience and judged by Lesley Waters, Tim Lloyd from the Captain’s Club and Vee Young, President of Christchurch Rotary Club, the sponsors of the competition.

The winner was Ashley Best from the Grange School who cooked seared tuna with asparagus and oven baked chips. Louis Despres from Twynham School came second with Sam Wiles from Highcliffe School and Jack Thorpe from Twynham School the runners up.

The final of the primary schools competition to design a representation of a healthy meal on a plate was won jointly by George Hall from Burton School and Tom Haines from the Priory School. Katie French from the Priory School came second with Ruby Waltham from Mudeford Junior School in third place.

Celebrity chefs Lesley Waters and Gary Rhodes provided cookery demonstrations which were packed out, as were entertaining demonstrations by Chris and James Tanner.

One of the more unusual demonstrations was by the cocktail barmen from the Captain’s Club who organised a ‘Bar Wars’ competition between men and women who had to reproduce cocktails which they had been shown by the barmen. The overall winner was Laura Ecclestone.

The festival’s president, Mary Reader, said: “The festival really goes from strength to strength and this year was the busiest yet. We had an excellent programme of cookery demonstrations and the market had the most interesting selection of food and drink that we’ve ever had.

“I’m really grateful to all of the volunteers and all of our sponsors who helped to make the weekend such a success.

“Of course the festival isn’t over yet as it continues in restaurants, cafes, pubs and tea shops right through this week until next Sunday so I hope people will take advantage of this and visit some of our local businesses.

“I’m sure that the festival does a lot of good for Christchurch and I believe it has contributed to Christchurch being one of the best towns for good food in the South.”

A new ale named after a leviathan of steam, named in tribute to a vital Kent Battle of Britain airfield more than fifty years ago, was launched at the annual fund-raising Swanage Railway Beer Festival and Diesel Gala last weekend.

The bottled beverage has been named after ex-Southern Railway ‘Battle of Britain’ class Bulleid Pacific steam locomotive No. 34070 ‘Manston’ which was built during the 1940s for hauling prestige express trains and restored for a new working life on the volunteer-run relaid Purbeck Line.

Visiting ex-British Rail diesel locomotives were joined at the annual Swanage Railway Beer Festival and Diesel Gala by the Purbeck Line’s two resident Class 33 diesel locomotives No. 111 and No. 103 ‘Swordfish’, both of which used to work in Dorset – including the branch line between Wareham, Corfe Castle and Swanage – between 1967 and 1988.

Golden Jubilee sparks rollercoaster of recollections

A fanfare by Verwood Concert Brass training band heralded the opening of an exhibition at Verwood Memorial Hall commemorating the hall’s golden jubilee on 9 May.

Earlier in the day, a celebration by seventy invited guests was held in a similar format to that in 1959 when the hall was first opened - the result of twenty-six years of fundraising, with a war in between.

A power-point presentation, old photographs and scenes from youth club pantomimes in the 1960s evoked some strong memories for some of those attending. A number of guests had links with 1959, including some who helped with the building of the hall and descendants of people involved at the time.

Jim Laird of Harley and Laird, Fred Bailey of Baileys Electrical and Stan Prince and John Baker who amongst other things helped dig the cesspit after a day’s work. Alan Harley represented his father, Alf and Norma Snow and David Cox represented their father Ted Cox, chairman of the Management Committee in 1959 until the early 1980s. A few had been unable to make it due to ill-health.

One, who had travelled from Blandford, said, “It was a rollercoaster of recollections and of meeting old friends and acquaintances from up to fifty years ago. It was the first time I had been to the hall for at least thirty years. Also, somewhat bizarrely, I found myself in a serious discussion with present-day officials about the cesspit!”

The exhibition featured displays of past times and there were promotions by current users, as well as entertainment including the training band, a violin and piano duet by Malcolm Evans and Matt Timmins, afternoon concerts and dance and drama. The evening was rounded off with an organ concert.

A wonderful floral display was provided by the Verwood Flower Club.

Vice chair of the memorial hall committee, Angela Daymond said, “It was a true village event much enjoyed by those who came.

“Improvements to the hall will continue with the next major project being a new porch. Anyone wishing to help fundraise for this project should contact me on 01202 822549.”

The Dorset flag was flown at half mast outside Verwood’s Memorial Hall in honour of local man, Ron Fardell who died on Saturday, 2 May aged 85.

Ron will be remembered for his huge contribution to the town, not only as a past councillor and his involvement with the Verwood branch of the Royal British Legion, which spanned more than thirty years, but also with the running of the town’s memorial hall.

Both he and his wife, Molly, dedicated their time to actively supporting the hall from 1975-2003. He served as secretary and treasurer throughout the years and after stepping down from the hall committee, he became president, a role he held until he died.

Ron had hoped to be well enough to attend the memorial hall’s golden jubilee, which took place on Saturday, 9 May, but sadly this was not to be. His funeral took place at St Michael & All Angels Church the day before on 8 May when, along with other mourners, the members of the hall committee paid their last respects.

Angela Daymond, vice chair said, “The committee honours Ron and Molly for all they did for the Verwood Memorial Hall.” She went on to explain that Molly, who was the booking officer for twenty-five years, is now in a local nursing home.

The nest, at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, is live on the web, thanks to a hidden Springwatch-style camera.

Nicky Hoar, Communications Officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “The staff at Lorton Meadows have been fascinated, watching the pair get together and occupy the nest box. It didn’t seem fair, so now everybody can watch. It’s really addictive. I like to check up on them first thing in the morning and hear the other birds singing around the nest tree.”

Kestrels are falcons, relatively small but fast birds of prey, which can often be seen hovering as they hunt. The pair have been named Kate and Chris, after the BBC Springwatch 2009 presenters Kate Humble and Chris Packham. The original Chris, who is busy getting ready for his debut as co-presenter of Springwatch, said: 'What an honour! Kestrels were my first birding love and are long term favourites. He is so much better looking than me, what a dapper chap… and she’s not bad either!'

The nest box is in a tree near the Wildlife Centre at Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, near Weymouth. Kestrels have been nesting at the reserve for at least three years. They normally lay between 4 and 6 eggs and last year the eggs were laid on 4 May.

The reserve and nature trails are open daily and the birds can be seen flying around as well as on screen in the Wildlife Centre. The Centre is open on Fridays and from 10am to 4pm for Lorton’s Open Day on Saturday 16 May, when staff can point out the nest tree and give you all the latest on these and other birds on the reserve.

You can watch the kestrels live from the comfort of your own home at www.dorsetwildlife.co.uk/kestrelcam.html

For more information about Lorton Meadows, ring the Wildlife Centre on 01305 816546.

£1 MILLION DRUG SMUGGLERS TO BE SENTENCED AFTER GROUND-BREAKING BRAZIL EXTRADITION

The convictions for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs followed a 14-week trial after a complex and detailed three year covert investigation – codenamed ‘Operation Foil’ – which included the ground-breaking extradition to this country from Brazil of a key member of the drug smuggling gang.

The comprehensive investigation by Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team as well as Devon and Cornwall Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Branch was also assisted by criminal investigators from HM Revenue & Customs.

Jafar Hajebrahim, aged 44, from Bournemouth; Alan Brian Austin, aged 55, from Barnstaple in Devon; Poria Abraham, aged 24, from Bournemouth; Ali Tavakolinia, aged 38, from Bournemouth and Louise Brindle, aged 33, from Christchurch were all found guilty at Bournemouth Crown Court on 8 April 2009.

‘Operation Foil’ is believed to have been ground-breaking following the successful extradition of Hajebrahim from Brazil under an agreement believed not to have been previously used.

The prosecution case was that Hajebrahim – who enjoyed a lavish lifestyle and owned businesses and property in the UK and Brazil – was one of the key figures in the gang responsible for financing and procuring cocaine from South America to Spain and ultimately to the UK.

Working in partnership with the police investigation, the Vauxhall Corsa car had been stopped by customs officers at the Portsmouth ferry port in Hampshire in December 2006 after arriving from Bilbao in Spain and found hidden inside the vehicle was 10 kilos of cocaine. The car driver – Louise Brindle – was arrested and it’s believed that the drugs originated in South America.

Detective Superintendent Russ Middleton, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “This investigation is an excellent example of how police forces and other agencies will collaborate, at home and abroad, to detect, reduce and disrupt serious and organised cross-border criminality that harms our communities.

“It was a complex investigation culminating in a lengthy trial and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in securing these convictions.

“These convictions will have a lasting impact and will contribute to our aims of making it harder for other such criminals by showing them that they will be pursued and brought to justice. We will also seize their money and assets so that they do not profit from their crimes,” explained Detective Superintendent Middleton.

Detective Chief Inspector John Crossland of Dorset Police, said: “This has been a particularly long and involved investigation and trial. I would like to pay tribute to the dedication and hard work of all those officers from both forces, with a special thanks to those involved in the case’s latter stages through the presentation of the case at court. I would also like to pass on my thanks to prosecution counsel Don Tait and James Cranfield.

“It is a mark of the professionalism of the investigators – and their collation and presentation of the evidence – that having initially pleaded not guilty, Hajebrahim reversed this decision, pleading guilty after four weeks of trial and the assessment of the evidence stacked against him.”

“This is an excellent example of what can be achieved through police forces sharing resources and intelligence, and working with our partnership agencies to focus on stopping the activities of high level criminals and keeping controlled drugs from our streets,” explained Detective Chief Inspector Crossland.
