Nappy road-shows encourage parents to use the real thing

Over seven million disposable nappies end up on landfills every year, costing the council taxpayer around £280,000 purely for disposal alone.

Now, new parents and parents-to-be are being encouraged to use ‘real nappies’ at a series of roadshows organised by the Dorset Reduction and Recycling Group.

Modern real nappies are shaped, have biodegradable liners, use modern fasteners, are machine washable and are easy and simple to use. They can also work out cheaper to use than disposable versions.

Estimates put the cost of disposable nappies for one child, from baby to toddler, at around £1000. Using real nappies reduces this cost by over half as well as being a more environmentally friendly option says Dorset County Council.

Parents and parents-to-be living in the Dorset County Council area can apply for a £30 voucher to spend with a listed retailer, or apply for a £30 refund if they’ve already bought real nappies.
