Yesterday, 200 runners began a 65-mile ultra-marathon to honour the memory of the men who took part in the Pegasus Bridge Operation.
The ‘Run to Pegasus’ event began at Tarrant Rushton in the presence of supporters and veterans ends at 12.15am on June 6 at Pegasus Bridge in Normandy, France – exactly 65 years after the D-Day landings took place.
Project 65 aims to raise £500,000, the majority of which will be divided between The Royal British Legion, The British Ex-Limbless Association (BLESMA), St Dunstan’s, RAF Benevolent Fund, the Army Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes.
A small part of the monies raised will be used to erect a memorial to the men of the Pegasus Bridge force and those directly associated with the operation 65 years ago. The memorial will be unveiled by Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt at 2.30pm on June 6 at Pegasus Bridge.
Danny Greeno, Chairman of Project 65 said, “…well over 200 heroes signed up to participate and help us reach our goal of half a million pounds for the veterans of our armed forces. We have already raised a huge £170,000 and we are sure we will reach our target. We would now like to ask the public for their support in helping us achieve it by donating through the website or even just by turning out along the route to give the runners a much needed cheer along the way!"
Donations can be made through the Project 65 website at www.project65.net
