Roots remain as nursery changes hands

Trehane Nursery, the Wimborne-based camellia nursery run by the same family for over 60 years, is under new management.

But the Trehane family has strong roots in the area and the business, local people may be pleased to hear, is passing from uncle, Jeremy, to nephew David Trehane.
 
Founded by David’s grandfather back in 1957, Trehane Nursery specialises in camellias and other ericaceous plants.

There is no doubt that green fingers run in the Trehane family - David has worked in the horticultural industry for twenty five years and is managing director of the Dorset Blueberry Company.

Jeremy said, “It’s a real delight for me to know that the business will remain within the family. While I will always be available if required, I know that David will bring a new entrepreneurial spirit to the nursery and I’m looking forward to stepping back and watching him bring his ideas for the future to fruition.”

In addition to Jeremy’s expertise David will also be able to call on his mother’s vast horticultural knowledge. World-renowned camellia specialist and author Jennifer Trehane retired from the family business in 1994, but she will now help out on a consultancy basis, utilising her international network of plant breeders to bring new varieties to the nursery.
 
“I have two incredible pools of talent to draw on within the immediate family,” said David. “Jeremy has built up a business with strong roots and excellent growth potential, Jennifer has the contacts to help me put that growth in place. On the nursery I also have the benefit of vastly experienced and knowledgeable staff. Our Nursery Manager, Lorraine Keets has been at Trehanes for twenty-nine years and I’ll be working closely with her in the months to come as we develop the nursery for future generations.”
