Bournemouth Scrabble Club held a one-day Scrabble tournament to raise funds for the Bournemouth Society for the Visually Impaired (BSVI). The event was held in the Rooper Hall in Moordown, home of the BSVI, who provided runners for challenges and an almost continuous supply of tea and coffee for those in need to help their brain cells.
There were seventy Scrabble players, in groups of 8 or 6, in which they all played each other for 7 games (called a Round Robin). Players came from as far apart as London, Devon and Sutton Coldfield. There were some unusual words played but highest single word score was 167 for ‘Paralyse’ by a player from Southampton.
The day was a great success. Not only did the BSVI raise £191 from the sale of homemade cakes and chutney, Christmas puddings and Christmas cards, and a raffle, but also the Bournemouth Scrabble Club presented the BSVI with a cheque for £500. An anonymous donor gave a further £10 to bring the total to £701.25.
