Brave survivors of cancer last weekend had another battle to face. The British weather. Their Relay for Life challenge took place at Ferndown Leisure on the outdoor sports track in the pouring rain.
Over fifty survivors aged 9-90 started off the event by completing a single lap of the track. The oldest competitor was Irene Sparrow, who has battled breast cancer since she was diagnosed at the age of 88 and the youngest, 9-year-old Cameron Osborne, was diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma just 2 weeks after his 6th birthday.
Pam Bentley a survivor of 20 years with breast cancer, organized the survivors event. Refreshments afterwards included strawberries and cream and bucks fizz, some of which were donated by Sainsbury’s Ferndown.
PR ambassador of the store, Helen Shurmer had the privilege of meeting some of the survivors and heard their touching stories.
The Relay for Life raises money for Cancer Research UK and the event not only remembers family and friends who have lost the battle with the disease, but also the survivors – those who have so many stories to share and inspire.
