Shopping and services - more to Verwood than meets the eye. There are two shopping areas: the main town centre which is built around Ringwood Road, Manor Road and Vicarage Road and the Morrisons supermarket complex just off Chiltern Drive. Between them you will find a good mix of shops and services.

Ferrett Green - this little island of green in the centre of the town used to be a car park. It is a sunny and pleasant spot where you can sit on the grass or on benches. A monthly Farmers Market is held and the next one, which will give you a good reason to visit, is 21 December 9am-1pm, just in time to stock up with your Christmas fresh fruit and vegetables. The Farmers Markets are normally on a Saturday. 27 January is the first one of the New Year.

Events - Verwood Carnival, the Lee Simmonds Memorial Trophy, the Rustic Fayre, Flameburst and the Christmas Extravaganza are the main events throughout the year. The Christmas Extravaganza has to be one of the best reasons to visit Verwood in December. No doubt you were there as it has just happened (Saturday 12 December). Make a note to visit in December 2010, it’s a real family occasion and the children can visit Santa in his grotto on Ferrett Green.

Heathland Heritage Centre - overlooking Ferrett Green and opened in 2003, the Heritage Centre boasts a restored primitive country pottery workshop, where traditional pot throwing is featured. It also offers a café where you can watch the world go by. Coffee, tea and home made cakes.

Memorial Hall - the Memorial Hall is a much loved facility and is constantly being improved. Many organisations make use of the hall and fundraising tabletop sales take place at regular intervals. On 31 December you can celebrate the New Year there with the popular SMAK Band. This 60s night is by ticket only at £9, which includes gateau, tea or coffee. Call 01202 821251 to book your ticket.

Recreation Ground - the play area on the recreation ground is the perfect place to take the children. The playground is fenced for health and safety reasons and there is a variety of pieces of play equipment to keep the little ones amused. The rest of the recreation ground is level and appealing when the sun shines. Various events have taken place here and a dog show is normally held on the recreation ground in the summer.

The Hub - Verwood’s premier venue stages top shows and screens movies. The contemporary facility has a wide range of rooms for hire as well as a theatre/dance hall. Conferences, classes and all types of functions can be held here. The Hub Bistro with a top class chef creating delicious and warming home-made soups, snacks and freshly cooked meals is open during the day and well worth a visit. A stroll around the sensory gardens in the Hub’s grounds will also delight on warmer days.

Verwood Leisure Centre - situated off Chiltern Drive. For your health and fitness regime, this is the place to visit. There are exciting classes, an excellent gym to get you in shape and beauty treatments by Pure Perfection Health and Beauty. Potterne Park - you will have to go a long way to find another park with such good facilities and so lovely and level with it. Football, rugby, netball plus a modern pavilion and changing rooms. It’s all available at Potterne Park. And when the sports people aren’t busy using it, other events are held such as the Rotary Rustic Fayre every August Bank Holiday. An event not to be missed.

Skatebowl - opened in 2006, Verwood’s skatebowl by Gravity Engineering in Potterne Park was branded the best in the South by skaters from around the country when it opened. It was designed for skaters, by skaters and draws those who enjoy bowl riding. The bowl, as opposed to a normal skatepark is deep with curves and corners making it suitable for BMXers, in-liners and boarders. The lower sections are suitable for younger enthusiasts.

Those are ten good reasons to visit Verwood. There are several more - many churches for example, many clubs and societies to attend, two trading estates with a wealth of industry, a radio station called Forest FM and a social club. With all this on offer, you may decide to move there permanently, instead of just paying a visit!

Once a quiet railway village on the fringe of Ferndown, West Moors has developed into a small community with a lot to offer. Ringwood dates back to Saxon times. The pretty town with its landmark church grew up around a crossing point on the River Avon. By the Middle Ages, Ringwood had become established as a market town.

Ringwood Market
A traditional street market held every Wednesday in the Market Place. As well as plants, fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes and accessories, there are often innovative products and if the price seems too high, try a little friendly bartering.

Furlong Centre
This pedestrianised area is chic and cosmopolitan with tables and chairs from the cafés spilling outside and fashionable shops clustering along the edges. A supermarket is included and the informal, yet busy atmosphere makes a refreshing change from most other supermarket complexes. Instead of dominating the Furlong Centre, Waitrose blends nicely with its surroundings, yet offers all the benefits of free parking and level walkways for easy shopping.

Jubilee Gardens
The pretty gardens near the Millstream are a legacy of the Vicarage gardens and still greatly photographed today. Situated near The Bridges, there is seating where you can take a rest. Just up the road is the Fish Inn alongside the River Avon. The meandering Millsteam flows to Bickerley Green.

Bickerley Green
This open space is a stone’s throw from the town centre. Purchased by the town council twenty-five years ago, it is preserved as a village green. The Bickerley is used for fairs, fesitvals and carnival activities.

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul
Dominating the Market Place is the parish church. Its tower can be seen for miles and the church, with its large nave, chancel and transept is worth investigating. The massive tower rises to about 100 feet and contains eight bells, it is usually open at least once a year and the climb is rewarded with breathtaking views.

Shopping
Ringwood is vibrant and busy, and the shopping areas are compact. The many shops are interesting with nationals rubbing shoulders with independently owned stores. From high fashion to haberdashery, outdoor wear to lingerie and kitchen accessories to living room furniture, Ringwood offers diversity and keen prices. Have a look at the advertisers surrounding the feature (on pages 8-9 of Mid September 09 issue) and judge for yourself.

Events
The town is well renowned for its Christmas parade when the shops stay open late and visitors flock to enjoy the festival spirit. There was a gingerbread house in the Furlong last year, and that will be back, with Santa. The British Pedal Car Grand Prix is another exciting event. This biannual mini Monaco next takes place in 2010. Summer in the Furlong Centre is well organised. From performing arts to sheep shearing – there is normally something to bring a smile. Ringwood Festival, the Carnival and Skatefest are more big events. The Carnival is on 19 September this year and the procession will be led by Carnival Queen, Charlotte Benson.

Greyfriars Community Centre
The centre thrives in an elegant Georgian House. The art exhibition for September is by Chérie Wheatcroft. In October work by the members of Ringwood Camera Club will be on display; and in November paintings by the centre’s own Friday afternoon group, Avon Painters will be on show. Classes include Pilates, Spanish and yoga.

Ringwood Meeting House
Built by Presbyterians in 1727, the Meeting House is one of the best surviving examples of a small meeting house in the country. It is run by the Ringwood Meeting House Association. Volunteers help with enquiries about local or family history. In the upper galleries of the building is a collection of old photographs of Ringwood and other memorabilia. Downstairs is an area for exhibitions. Open Monday-Saturday 10am-12 noon and Wednesdays 10am-2.30pm. Entrance 50p includes coffee or tea.

Pubs, restaurants, cafés
There are many established pubs, restaurants and eateries. Whether you have a yearning for traditional English, Indian, Chinese, Thai or Italian or maybe good old fish ‘n’ chips or exotic kebabs, you will find it in Ringwood. There is something to suit most culinary tastes, pockets and hours of the day. For lighter meals or just a quick coffee there are a number of cafés, some with outdoor seating.

With plenty of parking in the town, some of it free, Ringwood has a lot going for it and many shopkeepers defied the credit crunch by declaring excellent pre-Christmas trade in 2008.

Potted History
Ferndown is a town that has it all – a community with character and all the facilities for both work and play. But its beginnings were very humble.

One hundred years ago Ferndown was a modest village on the heath. Today it’s a thriving town with bustling shopping area, a plethora of businesses, leisure centre, theatre and a population of more than 16,000.

The first evidence of Ferndown’s existence was in 1321 when it was called Fyrne, derived from old English and meaning wooded hill. Ferndown does indeed sit on a small hill, today known as Penny’s Hill, named after Emma Penny who ran a laundry in Ferndown in the early 1900’s.

It was during the nineteenth century Ferndown grew from a few scattered cottages to a village. This was partly due to the extension of the Salisbury/Dorchester railway line in 1867 with a station at West Moors, making Southampton and Dorchester more accessible.

But it was the Ensbury Bridge across the River Stour built in 1910 that had the greatest impact on access to Bournemouth for work and trade. The original bridge, instigated by local landowners Lady Wimborne and Lt. Col. Prideaux-Brune, unfortunately collapsed and was replaced by the iron structure we see today and renamed New Road Bridge.

From modest beginnings Ferndown is now the largest settlement in East Dorset. It’s a fabulous mixture of old and new – the old soccer pavilion turned into a superb leisure centre and Penny’s Hill now boasting a modern shopping centre with everything needed by residents and visitors close by.

And yet, the modernised Ferndown, with its tree-lined residential streets and part pedestrianised town centre still retains the village feel of 100 years ago. Just take a look at the advertisers in this feature to see what Ferndown has to offer today.

Something for everyone in Winton & Moordown

Two areas of the sea-side town Bournemouth which remain distinct and individual
are Winton and Moordown.
The bustling mile or so of shops and businesses has a strong community spirit.
There is plenty of roadside parking, car parks and bus stops along the route with pubs,
takeaways, restaurants and cafés lending a cosmopolitan feel.

The area has developed in a relatively short space of time and was originally a settlement, partly constructed over clay and gravel pits. The local white clay was used to make bricks.

Key figures in the area’s development were the wealthy sisters, Georgina and Marianne Talbot who were determined to do what they could to give the poverty-stricken local agricultural workers a better life.

By 1891 the Winton population alone had reached 4,000. Eight years later it had risen to 7,200. In the 1880s Winton was said to be in the parish of Moordown, but by 1899 there had been so much development that this soon became the opposite.

One of the acknowledged classics of English literature was written by a woman who lived in Winton and gained her further education in Winton library. Flora Thompson’s trilogy ‘Lark Rise to Candleford,’ published 60 years ago, is now a popular and well-know piece of English literature.

10 Good Reasons to visit Wimborne Minster

Wimborne is a quaint market town with a central square, narrow streets, a corn market and a town trail to follow. The shops are plentiful and diverse - you only have to look through the advertisements supporting the feature on page 8-9 of the mid July issue of Viewpoint to realise this - and as the town's proper name suggests, it has a Minster. It also has a town crier and its own Militia. All these add up to a good enough reason to visit, but there is more to uncover in this Dorset jewel. Read on and discover why you really must take a trip to Wimborne.

Wimborne Minster the Church of St Cuthburga
This Saxon church dominates the town centre. With its Norman and Gothic architecture, gift shop and serene atmosphere, it is a visit that will live with you for a long time. People travel from all over the world to see the Minster, which includes the tombs of King Ethelred, John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset and the maternal grandparents of King Henry VII. There is the famous Quarterjack clock and the 14th century astronomical clock. The Minster plays host to festivals and concerts as well as its regular parish services. The sleepy Minster Green nestles alongside - a neat green space where you can sit and relax in the sunshine.

Shops and businesses
Wimborne is a hive of activity. Quality shops and businesses are numerous and diverse with everything from galleries and gifts to fashion, hair, jewellery, sports and traditional sweets. With pretty streets, decked with flowers and places to stop for coffee, a meal or snack, you will find plenty to fill your day. And it is interesting to explore the little mews and walk along the River Allen that flows through the town - you may well spot a kingfisher or some trout swimming upstream.

Wimborne Model Town
This dear little reproduction of Wimborne itself will have the children enthralled and peeping in at all the shop windows. Attention to detail and regular maintenance ensures that the model town with its very own Minster of course, always looks its best. Situated in a beautiful garden with a tea room, the attraction is suitable for all ages and its most recent addition is a model railway.

Dreamboats
Wimborne has its very own rowing boats, which can be hired for a lazy row along the river - head towards the Wimborne Market car park and you will see the signs. Alternatively, after your shopping spree, visit the tourist information centre, known as the TIC near the Square and ask for directions.

The Priest’s House Museum and gardens
Situated just off the Square, and beautifully located for a visit during your shopping trip, this 16th century town house is steeped in atmosphere. Exhibitions run throughout the year and the gardens are meticulous and provide an oasis of enjoyment in the very heart of the town. The tea room serves drinks and home made cakes.

A wealth of eating houses and pubs
You won’t go short of somewhere to eat in Wimborne. In the town centre alone there are twelve pubs, add this to the plentiful restaurants, cafés and bars and you can find exactly the type of cuisine that suits your mood and your pocket. If you prefer to eat out of town, there are some beautiful traditional country pubs just on the outskirts where you can relax with a good meal, a pint, or both.

The Jubilee Garden
Completed in the year of Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, it was opened by their Royal Highnesses the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The garden is planted as a 17th century Physick garden. On 27 April 2002, the garden received a fluke visit by Sir Bob Geldof, who planted the rosemary bush. The garden also houses a gazebo, dating from 1750. Situated behind the town council offices in West Borough, the Jubilee Garden is open for everyone to enjoy at all times.

The Corn Market
A courtyard area situated off the Square and a short walk from the Minster. It is surrounded by pubs and restaurants and every second Saturday of the month, there is a farmers market from 9am-1pm with locally grown produce.

Wimborne Market
Wimborne Market is the largest covered market in the South of England. It has over 400 stalls selling everything from fresh produce to antiques, arts and crafts. It also includes a Farmers Market every Friday from 7am-2pm.

The Chained Library
The Minster’s chained library is accessed by a spiral staircase built over 600 years ago. One of the first public libraries, it was founded in 1686 and is the second largest chained library in the country. You can see a manuscript written in 1343 on lambskin, a book bound for the Court of Henry VIII, and a Paraphrase of Erasmus printed in 1522 with a title page designed by Holbein. Manned by volunteers, the chained library is open most days of the week, 10.30am-12.30pm and 2pm-4pm, from Easter Monday until the end of October.
