East Dorset District Council is being asked to authorise a public consultation on a proposal to allow a small residential development on land in West Moors that is currently used as public open space.
In exchange, the council would receive a much larger parcel of land that could be used for informal recreational activities.
If authorised, the council’s officers will consult with residents, the parish council, and other interested bodies on the proposal to allow development on a half-acre area of public space in Weavers Close, in exchange for a nearby 32-acre parcel of land south of Woolslope Road.
The land near Woolslope Road is currently divided into three fields and used for grazing. However, acquisition of this site by the council would provide a substantial informal public open space, adjacent to an established residential estate.
The council feels the larger site is capable of significant improvement. Tree planting, habitat enhancement, path construction, and way-marking; benches and picnic areas. There is potential to open-up the riverbank and create a more attractive river environment.
The site also offers the potential for the provision of allotments to serve the demand in the village. Initial soil analysis and vegetation surveys have been undertaken, which conclude that part of the site could be suitable for this use.
There are a number of possible sources of funding available to the council to cover the costs of setting out and operating this facility, which will be looked at in more detail if the consultation is approved.
Cllr Barbara Manuel, Lead Member for Culture, said: “This scheme gives the council a fantastic opportunity to acquire a substantial area of land and to lay it out as public open space for local residents to enjoy.
“It also provides the opportunity to supply much needed allotments for the village. If the consultation is authorised, the council will be seeking the views of all West Moors residents.
“This will enable the Council to gauge opinion on whether residents feel this proposal will suit their needs and improve their local environment.”
The item comes before East Dorset District Council’s Policy and Resources Committee on 30 September.
