David Coxton

The family of a man who died in the Holton Heath area at the weekend have issued a tribute.

Police received a report of a serious assault at Sandford Holiday Park along Organford Road at around 2.20am on Saturday 5 March and discovered 36-year-old David Coxon, of Torquay, with serious injuries. He sadly died at the scene.

An investigation was subsequently launched by Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT).

On Sunday 6 March, 41-year-old Jason James of Torquay was charged with manslaughter.

In a statement, David’s family said: “It still seems utterly inconceivable that David has been so suddenly taken from us.

“He had battled through so many challenges in his life. He would always face them courageously, and somehow find it within himself to get back up and once again connect to his loving, loyal, caring, and happy heart – until now.

“We have lost forever his unmistakable huge presence, with booming laugh to match. We could never wish upon anyone the pain we feel when we remember his playful mischief, and incomparable bear hugs.

“It has been of enormous comfort to read on Facebook how so many others shared our love for David. He was a unique and treasured son, brother, uncle and friend. We love you beyond words, David, and you will never, ever, leave our thoughts.”

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Mark Samuel, of Dorset Police’s MCIT, said: “Detectives continue to work on this investigation and I would appeal to any witnesses at Sandford Holiday Park, who are yet to speak with police, to contact us urgently.

“It is also important to stress – as is typical in such circumstances – that it would be entirely inappropriate for Dorset Police to comment further ahead of the trial. It is vital that the justice system is allowed to follow its course.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 5:40. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
