#MuseumFromHome - tank museum online output shoots up

The Tank Museum has announced that its videos have reached a global audience and been viewed almost two million times during the coronavirus lockdown.

The museum at Bovington near Wareham has boosted its social media output in the fight against quarantine boredom, and in the last 30 days has published 23 new educational and informative videos across its social media platforms.

“Even though our team is working remotely, we’ve been using the available technology to continue brining educational content about The Tank Museum and its collections to our audiences,” said Nik Wyness, head of marketing, who explained that the museum’s YouTube Channel has added 8,000 new subscribers to its total of 250,000+ during the lockdown. With 1,800,000 channel views since the UK lockdown began on 23 March, a staggering 280,000 hours of Tank Museum video content has been consumed on the platform. Another 140,000 views have been gained on The Tank Museum Facebook page.

Visitors to The Tank Museum YouTube Channel will discover a new series of entertaining and educational videos that have been filmed ‘at home’ including weekly Q&A videos, book and film reviews and a weekly education challenge.

Curator David Willey and museum director Richard Smith are also giving illustrated lectures on related subjects of interest. A surprise hit was one about the History of the Jerry Can given by the curator.

“He’s also working on a series which is a detailed guided tour of the museum, using visuals captured from the Google Street View walk-through of our Tank Story exhibition,” said Nik.

The museum plans to continue entertaining its audiences throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Nik added, “It’s great to see how well our videos are being received and the messages of support that are arriving daily from around the world as a result. As a charity whose primary source of fundraising is through the sale of admission tickets, it’s important to reach as wide an audience as possible to ensure the continued support of the museum. A Tank Museum fan commented, ‘I love the content you put out on youtube to make this lockdown more bearable! Keep up the amazing work and I can’t wait to someday visit the museum myself’.”
