Christchurch Council is to work with the producers of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces on a competition for people to come up with exciting new beach huts at Highcliffe.

The12 new huts will be placed on a number of sites between the Cliffhanger Café and Highcliffe Castle. They will all be different though and will have to conform to certain design specifications.

The winning designers will be given £8,000 each to pay for materials to build the huts and the results will feature in a four-part mini-series hosted by George Clarke. The huts will then be available for rent from Christchurch Council.

Matt Reeks, Community & Open Spaces Manager at Christchurch Council, said: “The idea for this project came about when George Clarke was filming at Mudeford with a floating beach hut for his Amazing Spaces programme last year. We mentioned that we were looking at projects to regenerate the beach front at Highcliffe and the idea for the competition was born.”

Cllr Vicki Hallam, ward councillor for Highcliffe, said: “This is a very exciting project and I’m sure it will give a boost to the local economy and help to rejuvenate the village. I know that there used to be beach huts in Highcliffe in the 1950s and it will be great to see them back here again and give a community feel to the area.

Anyone wishing to enter the competition should email clifftop@plumpictures.co.uk for a technical specification and further details. The closing date is 1 May.
