Two cycling enthusiasts, Giancarlo Gambardella and close friend Darran Howard, set out from the Royal London Hospital today (Friday) to complete a 200km cycle ride to Poole Hospital.

The friends have so far raised £2,915, which will be donated to NHS Charities Together’s COVID-19 Urgent Appeal, which benefits all NHS hospital charities, including Poole Hospital Charity.

Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, cycling has gained in popularity and Giancarlo has been part of this trend with inspiration taken from Darran, who is a professional cyclist.

“Cycling has given me the means to remain active over the past few months and has been great for my mental health too, having previously suffered mental health problems,” said Giancarlo.

The idea to take on this cycle ride came about when both friends were doing a 95km cycle and posting stories on Instagram along the way. Their journey gained a following and Darran suggested that they should do a cycle to raise money for charity.

Giancarlo has chosen Poole Hospital as the finishing line as his son spent a few days on the children’s unit after being admitted with an infection.

“The doctors, nurses and ward staff were all wonderful,” said Giancarlo.

“When people see that even a non-professional cyclist can take on such a challenge, I really hope it gives them motivation, positivity and a bit of a lift.”

The duo aim to complete the journey in 10 hours.

Janine Golding, community fundraiser for Poole Hospital Charity, said, “Giancarlo and Darran are putting in such a tremendous effort all in the name of charity. Funds raised will benefit Poole Hospital by supporting staff well-being activities and providing much needed resources for wards.”
